Blast from the Past #115: Crab mechanic mutant

This is another drawing I did back in the early days of working with Playmates to come up with ideas for characters to extend the TMNT toy line. It wasn't completely fleshed out, but the idea was that this would be a mutant crab with a "mechanic" theme -- one of his large claws would be replaced with a mechanical one, and he would have tool belts and such. This idea was never used. -- PL

  1. Ah the gold Mine of characters that Playmates has just tossed in the Trash.
Some people may consider it ass kissing but seriously, You're way to creative to put up with such numbskulls.
You guys at Mirage have inspired so many of my generations artists you have no idea, you should be proud of the influence you've had on all of us.

  2. Seriously. If the show is on hiatus after the DTV movie for the foreseeable future, PLEASE GO WITH A NEW COMPANY for the third time around.

A Crab mutant figure idea is so much cooler than what Playmates is currently putting out.. Just take a look at the laziness in THESE designs..

Any REAL company would take any chance they could get in using ideas from the creator of a series they where trying to sell..not Playmates :)..

Their current business model is 'Lets Re-use Movie molds and just slap on anything we have lying around and call it a Cyber mutant' :)..

If these toys and their 'BTTS Splinter' 'design' doesn't convince you they don't care anymore, I don't know what will :). Splinter is basically a movie mold just repainted with a BTTS logo slapped on it.

  4. You may have scanned it, but maybe the guy who actually took the pictures, or the guys who published the magazine are upset that you're taking their credit? ;)

This crab mutant is kick ass! I wish more larger figures were made. I really love the Mosquito and the Killer Bee Mega Mutants that were made. Did you design those Mr. Laird?

No, but I think it's possible Ryan Brown and/or Steve Lavigne may have had a hand in those designs. -- PL
