Early Triceraton

Here's another one of those early Laird/Eastman collaborations from 1983. This one is obviously a precursor to the Triceratons which showed up in both our "Fugitoid" one shot and the TMNT comics. Note that here, the predominant body color is green and not orange. -- PL

  1. This Triceraton also looks like he is sad and certainly not very intimidating. Still a very cool drawing none the less. Thanks Pete for sharing.

  2. Oh gosh, he looks so *sad*! Did he come back to his home world and find everyone was extinct?
    ;o)

How fun though to see the early incarnation of what became such a powerful group of characters.

  3. This is really cool! I'd be interested in seeing how close some of the other designs were in their initial phases (Mousers, the Fugitoid, etc.).

Something else I thought was interesting from a design point of view was the Mouser redesign for the 3D pilot available to download on the official website. Was that arachnid/insectoid design something that was sprung on you (so to speak) or was it a collaborative process?

  4. It sure is sad lookin', it also reminds me of the Green Shogun Triceraton figure from 1994.
Don't see many Green Triceratons, do they come in other colors in the comics or are they all shades of Orange?

  5. -->>There was a Triceraton with a tint of green in the original cartoon, wasn't there, Vee ??

There was a small bad of them that attacked the city and Don tricked them with the robotic dinosaurs.

If memory serves, I believe that "Spider-Mouser" design was something that the artists at Rainbow Studios came up with on their own. I don't remember doing any sketches for that. -- PL

I believe that all of the Triceratons in the comics have been some shade of orange, in their appearances on color covers and in the short-lived color Volume 2 series. -- PL

  8. Yes Dave You're correct in that one, if I remember correctly that had a few differnt colors in the old toon episode.
Can't say I cared for those Triceratons though.

  9. Peter,
Ah ok I should have been a bit more specific but I guess the answer would be the same.
What I was wondering was, in your TMNT (or vision of them) do other colors exist sort of like with the human race.
I guess with reptiles or lizards the color choices are endless, lucky them!

  10. See I didn't think this Triceraton looks sad, I think he looks content. Very very chill, like he just ate a really good meal and is really comfy.

  11. I love the super deformed look. Maybe there should be a PVC line of TMNT miniatures. The Smurfs had a massive line. Maybe they could be in vending machines like the Homies figures.
