Blast from the Past #317: Fly Guy sketch

Another page from that sketchbook...

I like this drawing, and I see the apparent connection to what happened with Baxter Stockman in the original TMNT tv series, but I am not sure if this drawing had any influence on that development. -- PL

  1. It does look like Baxter The Fly! Take away the supporting harness and a slight alteration to the mouth and its him! I didn't realize the number of influences that you had on the toy line and all the borrowed and tweaked concepts!Great work adn I love that drawing as well!

I always thought after the "Shredder is Splinter'd" your involvement in the cartoon production was mostly done. Did you creat concepts like Baxter Stockman as a fly and character desgins like the Punk Frogs for example who came at the same time? Call me curious! :)

  2. Wow, this is awesome! I always loved this toy! This looks so much cooler than what ended up on the cartoon.

Thanks for continuing to post this stuff. Production art is my favorite thing ever. Especially toy development art.

  3. How could you not know if any of your drawings had any influence?

  4. I'm starting to think the toyline should have carried the E&L moniker as well. Another great design, as usual.

A different company made that show, and mirage didnt have aaanywhere near as much involvement as with the 2k series.(correct me if my history's wrong there,PL.)

I am almost positive this inspired Baxter because of 2 things:HIS POSTURE,look he stands exactly like baxter and how he has a 2 human arms and 2 fly arms.

if it is they kind of dropped the ball, the harness wouldve been alot cooler and more menacing and even made more sense than him wearing that cardigan sweater and bow-tie.
    (though nothing against baxterfly)

  6. I like the inclusion of the mechanical exoskeleton as it explains how an insect of that size would be able to walk around in our less-oxygen heavy environment. It's a very nice subtle touch.

Thanks! I believe I added that element because I had read somewhere a critique of giant bugs in movies, and that was one of the points raised. -- PL

  8. Peter, why don't you make Baxter's Fly form to appear in the 2012 TMNT TV show? I wanna see the black Baxter looks like as a fly. That'll give us memories. :)

    2. Thanks. Next time you make a future episode of TMNT, make Baxter-Fly appear, OK?

    3. As I already said, I have nothing to do with the new TMNT TV series. I sold the TMNT property to Viacom over three years ago. I am not working on, not do I make decisions about, any new TMNT projects. -- PL
