TMNT Volume 4 update

I have finished toning, and just started lettering, issue #30 of TMNT Volume 4. I expect that it it will take at least a couple of weeks to finish.

If anyone wants to write a letter to the Editor for possible inclusion in this issue, the deadline for such is probably about three weeks from today -- let's say March 15. -- PL

  1. Sweet! I've been waitin' for the next issue. It's a great storyline that has me wondering in suspense. I knew you wouldn't let me down Pete.

  3. About the only thing I remember from the last issue was that we where introduced to 'Hamato Shredder'...

It's been so long, I've pretty much forgotten everything else, but that one cool idea stuck with me..

  4. So go back and reread it Neil!

Hey Peter, what programs do you use when you're lettering? It's something I'm wanting to get into. I've been dabbling with a few different methods (inDesign, Illustrator, even Comic Life Pro), but just thought I'd ask.

Great to see it's not far off now!

Actually, I think he was introduced TWO issues ago. -- PL

  6. That's great news (and something that I think a lot of us were looking forward to finding out).

Where do we submit a letter to the editor?

Thanks for the news Mr. Laird. Can't wait for my copy. I'm sure it will turn out great!

  7. I may just have to go back and re-read :)...

It's been ages since I picked up issue 1 v4.

BTW, Peter, did the Armored truck in I think it was Issue 1 V4 ever have any plans to be revisited? I don't think it's ever shown up again, and I always figured it was a tribute to the new 2003 series that it was in there at all..

Trist, my process for lettering starts with scanning the inked artwork at 300dpi, then cleaning up any little stray lines, blobs of ink, etc., (and also straightening the artwork) in Photoshop 3.0. (Yes, I still use that old version!)

Then I create a Quark Xpress document, into which I import the individual page files. (Actually, I have a blank TMNT comic template I created in Quark some years ago that I reuse for every issue.) I do all of the lettering with Quark's native text tools, except for the sound effects -- those I create in Adobe Illustrator, tweaking them with a variety of filters, then saving them as EPS files so that they can be imported and placed into the Quark document.

I do two separate Quark documents for each issue -- one for the interior pages, and another for the covers and inside cover pages.

Once all that is done, I open the Quark files in Adobe InDesign. There are usually a few things that don't convert properly, so I tweak them as needed, then save the InDesign files to give to Dan to send to the printer.

You might well ask -- why don't I create the files directly in InDesign? Well, that's what I hope to do someday, when I learn more about how InDesign does things... but right now, I am very comfortable with the lettering and layout tools in Quark. One of these days, though... -- PL

I believe the armored car in Volume 4 was inspired by the one used by the Turtles in the 2K3 series. As for it turning up again... it's possible. I have in the back of my head an idea for doing something with the idea of those bodies the Turtles discovered in the armored car, but whether of not I ever will is anyone's guess. -- PL

  11. -->> SPIT !! !!

    "IN Design " is a dream ..

Quark became the design program of my worse nightmares..

by the time i learned IN D. ..

i never ever EVER wanted to go back to Quark again. EVER !!

Tho' i had to anyway .. luckily IN D. , while not perfect ..

it's fairly decent for Quark DOC. compatibility.

I love that program so much.

Very excited to hear #30 is on the way! Will you be offering the same limited sketch copies like with issue 29?

I plan to do as many head sketches in the books as I did with #29, perhaps more. -- PL

  17. Hi, Mr. Laird! It's good news that the new issue of TMNT v4 is coming. I like everything in the book - your fascinating manner of telling and excellent artwork of Jim Lawson.

Also I like that the plot is complicated and it takes us back to the events from the past adventures of TMNT, some of which we haven't seen yet. And, taking into consideration that you are going to finish the story in 6-10 issues, it is interesting how you will reveal all of that.

Especially I'm interested in the mystery surrounding the armored car from the very first issues. It will be great if you will really mention in the end some forgotten things from the beginning of the story. Thus, connecting all the strings.
I'm looking forward for the continuation!

  18. Mr. Laird,
I was wondering if in the back of your mind you had any ideas for how many issues this vol. might be comprise of or it you are just doing the story as it comes and whenever a issue comes out is when it does. And will vol. 4 #30 also be $10.00 on the TMNT website?
