Blast from the Past #695: Sketchbook page 40, idea for fifth Turtle
Here on page 40 of the sketchbook is a drawing which depicts another version of the proposed "fifth Turtle", this one musclebound in what seems to me to be done in a somewhat deliberately humorous fashion. -- PL
Read the title then looked at the drawing. I said to myself "that had to be a joke right!?" . Glad you put "...seems to me to be done in a somewhat deliberately humorous fashion."
I do really like the concept of the one posted 2 days ago from page 38. (minus the tail which appears to be on the wrong side of the body.) Once I saw it, I couldn't unsee it.
"the tail which appears to be on the wrong side of the body"
I'm not sure how you are seeing that. The tail, although different in appearance from the way we've traditionally drawn the Turtles' tails (long and pointed versus short and stubby), it's in exactly the same place as I always put the tails, in the groin area between the front and back shells. -- PL
As a freelancer, I have to take on jobs sometimes that I'd really rather not, and they're the hardest thing in the world to draw. Sort of like a musician having to learn a tune he can't stand. How did it feel, trying to come up with designs for a concept you weren't all that crazy about to begin with? Did you still enjoy the drawing or did it become an exercise in frustration?
Most of the time, the drawing was fun, even if the concept was not my favorite. However, I had a significant amount of training in that area, as the bulk of my freelance illustrating career before the TMNT happened involved drawing things I had no great interest in drawing.
However, in retrospect I am glad I drew all those things. -- PL
