Unused Art

These are drawings I did this past month for Playmates, for possible use in packaging of some upcoming toys. It turned out that they really weren't what they wanted, so they won't be used for that. But it was fun drawing them. Maybe I'll finish inking them and try to sell them at the NC show. -- PL

  1. Haha, you're a tease, Peter Laird! A toy-tease!

I'm very curious about what figures art such as this would be used for.

  2. Man o Man!
One of the great disappointments living on the west coast! I can't meet you at any shows! I would totally buy your work in a heartbeat!

I love your art; it really does get better each time I see it!

    Awesome job!

  3. Pity they won't be used. These look really awesome. I especially like seeing the two action poses side-by-side. Sort of a study in dynamic drawing in and of itself.

(I know when I sit down to draw, it's hard not to fall back on certain poses that I know would look good.)

Well, stick a few bling-bling chains and some funky pants on them...

    JUST kidding!

Playmates may be putting the toys out there, but they have no taste when it comes to art. Those are too good to waste. You should try to sell them at NC-- or even on your official Mirage site.

  5. It would be nice to see you sell some TMNT artwork on the official website. That way people who live abroad (like me) and people who can't make it to the conns can can their hands on some awesome turtle art like this! :)

  6. Playmates FOR SHAME!!! ;o) Such great artwork should not be ingnored. I second the notion of putting them up for sale on the website. The only problem is the time difference(livin in Aus). They would probably be sold by the time I get online but at least I would have a chance.

I have that problem too, while people in the US are enjoying their breakfast, I'm already enjoying my dinner :)
Maybe the problem can be helped with Mr. Laird making tons and tons of drawings :)

Hmm... you almost got me going with the "bling-bling" comment.

In defense of Playmates, I think they DO have taste in art, and in point of fact, the look they were going for in the unnamed project was NOT what I was providing them -- and I fully agreed with their evaluation of the situation. They wanted a specific style, and this was not it. It was a completely mutual and agreeable decision to abandon these pieces that I drew -- no harm, no foul. -- PL

  9. -->> ..still woulda been rad if they could have used these in someway.

Like when you did the illustrations / cut outs on the back of those coloring books.

  10. I definitely agree that some secondary use for these drawings should be found!

  11. Man, those sketches are killer! The action poses are just full of awesomeness. Peter, you never fail to impress with your artwork.

Maybe... these drawings can be added to the upcoming portfolio that you, Dan, and Steve have been working on? Wishful thinking, perhaps, but I second what a few of the other fans have said. I'm sure many of us who can't readily attend east coast cons would love a chance at purchasing some art prints via the Mirage website.

  12. Yeah! I want to know also just what sort of sneeky things are you up to buster!?! lol
I really hope it's for modern updated versions of old figures *prays*
The art is still amazing! and perhaps they should get ryan brown to do art that is if he's not to busy :\
What I really miss is each character having their own box art, boy that sure would set the turtles line apart from everything else on the shelves today!!
    Something to think about ;)

  13. I agree, that old box/packaging art was so much fun. There was always so much going on in the background there. The packaging was like a toy in itself.

  14. Hey Pete,

Who are the Mirage artists dabbling in CGI art now adays? I know there's at least three, I think. Are any of them proffesionally trained and do you think you'd ever go into that area?

Every time I see these types of pieces, I know even my 3D art has a long way to go before it looks anywhere near pro :).

  15. Peter, you do realise the more "new" Turtle art we keep seeing from you the more we're all going to want you to draw a full issue of vol. 4, right?

Your stuff is far too good to only appear on one offs, napkins, and paper plates :)

  16. How weird is it that Playmates can be like, "Hey sorry Mr. Creator of TMNT, but that's not quite what we're looking for."

Funny how the world works. Great art anyway!

  17. Oh, super gorgeous of art! Never grow tired of viewing these!

  18. They could always be pinups in future comics. It would be great to see the return of guest artist pinups just like the old Mirage days.
