"Four Reptiles and a Rodent"

Mike Dooney gave me a hard time when he saw me working on this at Mirage today. I think he threw up his hands and yelled something like "Oh my God -- MORE prints??!!"

"Yes," I said, "but they're SMALL prints."

I decided to try the portfolio idea with those prints I made to take to the Heroes con, reformatting them a little and reducing them in size to 8.5 by 11 inches. I think they came out well, so much so that I am a bit further along in being convinced that it might be a good idea to offer them for sale through the Mirage website. I'm not sure what I'll sell them for at the con -- maybe $20, maybe $25.

I only made twenty-five sets today, to kind of test the waters. I was quite pleased that -- after significant trial and error -- I was able to run 9 by 12 inch white envelopes through our color copier without jamming, so I could print the title right on the envelope instead of going through the messy process of spray-mounting a title block on each one. I still don't know exactly what I did to get the copier to accept the envelopes -- there was a lot of menu-surfing on the control panel of the copier, and choosing of this option and that option. But it did work, eventually. Before he left for the day, Dan Berger gave me a couple of helpful hints (he spends a lot of time with this copier) -- a good thing, as otherwise I think I'd still be there. -- PL

  1. Pete, I am very excited at the possibility of getting one of these portfolios through the Mirage website. Oh and $20 sounds better than $25. You had to figure I would prefer that price.

  2. You must have spoken just so to the copier-- I notice that when I need to run copies on our over-worked machine, I manage to avoid the jams others encounter by (a) being aware of its limits and (b) speaking personally to it, asking it how its day has been, patting it, praising and thanking it...

No, I'm not crazy. I don't have HALF the jams others do.

And FRANKLY, I was sure you'd charge much more for those!

  3. Duh Cyn, you know as well as I machines have feelings. Lepsie's bus hates me so it decided to have an injector go bad. I think my new bus is starting to like me, it's been behaving...except for that transmission.

And I want one of those portfolios!!

  4. Rad,
Why would Dooney have a problem with prints though?
    Care to explain Pete?

  5. Yay!

(Also, copiers were meant to be played with. I've had numerous jobs where it was my job to use and debunk them. Never fear, you can always pull the plug to reset it if you push a wrong button.)

Sorry, but our copier looks like the type that would triple-dog dare you to pull its plug-- and then beat the living daylights out of you, all the while singing a song of victory.

It likes ME because I know not to run freaking CONSTRUCTION paper through it, causing all that paper lint to build up and cause a major melt-down-- but no matter what I say, KINDERGARTEN teachers who have taught less than four years KNOW BEST. *eye-roll*

Vaughn, Mike wasn't REALLY mad -- just giving me a bit of good-natured ribbing because I already had something like eight different prints that I'm bringing to the Heroes Con... and they take up a LOT of table space! -- PL

  8. Mike is the good-natured ribbing king... unless of course, he really means it and disguises it as good-natured ribbing, fooling us into thinking it was good-natured, in which case he would be the master of deception and an evil individual indeed!

  9. Oooh! The portfolios have come into being! I do hope that it works out that they can be made available though the website. Having "witnessed" the whole process here makes them that much more special.

You'll have to forgive me Peter, but your entry here had me giggling imagining you standing at the copy machine patiently (?) coaxing functionality out of it (we've all been there), and wishing to God that your favorite Turtle would show up help out already!
(Personally, I've been there, too. ;o))

  10. lol thanks Peter,
I thought perhaps he had to do some comic work or something as I've heard recently he's really not into it anymore.
I sure wish he was though as I really would love to see him do a few issues of tales.

I also have to agree with the others that if you sold thes eold the site I would buy quite a few of them for sure, even from other artists.
Could be the start of something interesting.

Oh can I make a suggestion?
I'd love to see a calendar for 2009 just something I thought I'd bring up now before it's to late :)

  12. Dang It!
I really wish I was going to that Con! I would totally pay $25.00, or even more for that!

Good luck! I'm sure you will sell out no problem!
