Blast from the past #327: Found sketchbook part 3

Here's the third and last bunch of stuff from that sketchbook.

First up is a "wolverine mutant", clearly intended as part of the TMNT toy line -- probably as a bad guy.

Next is a very rough "rough" for an ad for the "Leonardo One Issue Micro-Series". I can't remember if this was meant to be a "house" ad, one we'd put in various Mirage comics, or something we'd use in publications like the Comics Buyer's Guide. In fact, I can't remember if this design ever made it to a finished piece.

This next one may be that same mutant wolverine character, slightly tweaked. I like his goggles.

This next one isn't a sketch, per se, but it is kind of interesting (well, I find it so, anyway). It's my chart of the proposed contents of the Gobbledygook special.

I get a kick out of this one, done just for fun, of Donatello whistling nervously as he is stalked by a big, creepy monster.

This next one might have been a rough sketch for a proposed TMNT portfolio piece, but I can't remember for sure. I'm not certain it is obvious enough in the sketch, but the Turtles here are -- for some reason -- on top of some gigantic beast, maybe Godzilla-sized, and that thing next to them is one of the creature's dorsal fins… and the little bug-like things on the left side of the drawing are parasites living on the creature.

This one is interesting, and I've rotated it sideways for easier viewing, as it was drawn in the sketchbook in this orientation. I am pretty sure these are quick doodles by the great dino man himself, Steve Bissette. I think he may have been trying to give me some pointers on how to draw dinosaurs, from back when we were starting work on the never-completed "Commandosaurs" project.

And the last thing from the sketchbook is from that same project -- here I was trying to work out a design for the "Commandosaurs" logo. -- PL

  2. O_O! I LOVE that big creepy monster! That would have made a killer toy, especially if it had a movable jaw and could eat and swallow other toys. Both versions of the wolverine mutant is also cool. I own the TMNT & Other Strangeness Role-Playing Game book made by Palladium Games in the mid-1980's, and in it there is a mutant wolverine named "Caesar" that was drawn by Kevin Eastman I believe. Any relation to that character/drawing?

OH that reminds me: I recall a comic or toyline idea called "Barbearians" featuring bears in a barbarian setting. The main character/leader was named Frostbite I think. I even saw sculpts of 2 of the characters somewhere on the internet at one time also. Do you recall this idea and if so where there any ever plans to go forward with it in some way?

    None that I can recall.

I remember it well! It was one of the many toy concepts that the Funatix! group, of which I was a founding member (along with other Mirage Studios alumni Jim Lawson, Dan Berger, Mike Dooney, Eric Talbot, Steve Murphy, and for a while Steve Lavigne and Ken Mitchroney), came up with some years ago. It was probably the property that came the closest to making it to the toy shelves -- we even had a short animated clip made -- but it never quite came together. It was fun to work on, though, as were many of the Funatix! properties. -- PL

Okay, just two completely unrelated wolverine characters.

Awesome! I'd have loved to see it get made into a cartoon or comic book, even if it was just a limited series or 1-shot comic. Did the Barbearians live on our Earth, or were they from an alternate reality along the lines of Usagi Yojimbo? I'm a huge fan of animal-people and concepts that take two ideas and mesh them together. Plus the name Barbearians is catchy LoL.

We thought it was catchy, too. The basic set-up was similar to UY in that it was a universe of anthropomorphic characters.

As for a comic book, I have a vague memory of working on some kind of "Barbearians"-related comic thing, but it may have been a mini-comic we did for some purpose. -- PL

  6. For the article, it is a history that is interesting and good to try.
