A little treat from the Turtle Documentary guys

When I got up this morning and checked my email, I found one containing the following link:

It leads to a short clip which may or may not make its way into the TMNT documentary. Isaac and his crew taped it in my office at Mirage Studios in Northampton, and it's basically me talking about Graphix Duo-Shade (the special paper Kevin Eastman and I used when we drew the first bunch of issues of the original TMNT comic books), and -- in penciling, inking and then toning a drawing of Donatello -- giving a demonstration of how it works. That was a fun afternoon, hanging out with a nice group of people.

If you have ever wondered how the Duo-Shade paper makes its magic, you might want to check this out. -- PL

  1. That is very interesting. I've heard of Duo-Shade but didn't really know what it was.

  2. It really adds a lot of depth when you add the grays. Very cool! Thanks for sharing this with us.

  3. As a none artist, that was fairly amazing watching it come together. How about a web series, where you just draw?

    1. That's very flattering, Shaun... but given how little I draw these days, it could be pretty boring!

But the idea of a web series where different artists are shown drawing -- now THAT could be something. There are so many great illustrators... could be fascinating to see them working. -- PL

  4. That was so cool. I'm really excited for this documentary. The cameras don't do it justice though. I have a piece of TMNT duo shade art (a Jim Lawson commission of Leo)and for months I thought it was perfect crosshatching, haha.

Hopefully I see you tomorrow at the Eric Carle museum.

  5. I gotta second Shaun's suggestion about seeing more videos of you drawing. I've spent the past year illustrating my own comic book, which has given me new insight into (and appreciation of) the process. The confidence with which you yield the brush is impressive!

  6. Love your Donnie drawing, Peter!! Using ink in a drawing seems very complicated.

    Take care!!

  7. Good to see this video. The duo-shade paper was so much a part of the Mirage comic book look and feel. Don't think I ever saw any other comic publishers or non-Mirage artists use it. I love good quality black & white artwork; for me it will always beat a colour page.
