Blast from the Past #367: pencil drawing for cover of Archie Comics' "TMNT Adventures" #41

This is interesting to me for the idea more than for the drawing. Where did I get the idea to have those two characters reflected in Leonardo's sword blades?

At this point in time, I can't recall. But it worked pretty well, even if logically and optically unrealistic. -- PL

  1. This looks awesome! I LOVE it! I can't wait to see more! Do you have any like this with Raph?

  2. Sometimes breaking the rules of logic and optics can be the best way to create a cool effect. It's like Star Wars physics. No way you could do some of those Jedi jumps or, get those awesome space explosions in the real world. But hey, they are cool to look at. ;) I think what you did here works really well. It's a nice effect. It looks really good in color! Here it is in Color!
I always thought the turtles looked strange with irises and pupils. I know it was the way they did them in the Archie comics. I always preferred the white slits. The all white eyes remind me of Batman when he is wearing his cowl. It just looks more dangerous and edgy. :D
That's just my opinion though. My opinion and a nickle will get me 5 cents. ;)
Very cool drawing! Thanks for sharing with us.

  3. Hi PL,
This is Michele from Italy. I just discovered your blog right now. I had very beautiful time with TMNT during childhood.
I have a question that jumped in my mind right now:

I read comics and I see that in USA(and also in French-Belgium) the trend is reprint all the sagas in deluxe editions(think about the absolute books from DCcomics).
Why don't you reprint all the TMNT material in chronological way in tome like Absolute Sandman or Strangers in Paradise(I drool thinking them very big with green leather-like cover and turtle surface)?

I tell you this because in Italy the TMNT comics adventure can't reach a large audience and they are printed rarely. Buying the single issues from USA is too expensive so a very good "absolute" collection could be a good way to make overseas fans happy.

    Many thanks for you attention.

  4. I would like that as well, Michele, but that might be something that needs Nick's attention.

I remeber that cover and I always wondered if it was opctically possible or not. Either way its beautifully done! The issue itself was as well!

  5. I do believe I have this issue. I always liked the cover. Though, I think the colored version is what made me not second guess it. I immediately looked at the pencils and said "something isn't right here."
I agree about the eyes. It never occurred to me why a more "cartoony" drawing of the turtles had to have such seemingly realistic eyes.

MIchelle, welcome to my blog! I'm happy to hear that you had a great time with the Turtles as a child, and I love your vision of the TMNT comic collections with "green leather-like cover and turtle surface" -- that would be very nice.

Unfortunately, though I have retained some rights to do new TMNT comic books after I sold the TMNT property to Viacom near the end of 2009, I don't think I have the right to do reprintings of that nature (or reprintings at all -- I have to check on that).

It is possible (though how likely, I do not know) that Viacom may license the rights to do something like that to another company. It probably wouldn't hurt to write to Viacom (or IDW, their new comic book licensee) to inquire and/or encourage. -- PL

  7. Peter and Michele IDW is reprinting vol 1 (or so they said). Also I would rather buy omnibuses from mirage, that would be awesome.

    Have a good day PL

  9. I just wanted to state that I read your comments on the news of Kevin returning as a co-writer and consultant with IDW. Thanks for the input and I apologize for myself and other in the future if it becomes too common as new projects unfold.

  10. There was a Marshall Rogers Batman cover with Deadshot, where Batman coming at him was reflected in his shiny head mask. Todd McFarlane used the same trick on a Spiderman cover with Mysterio. Could one of those have been your inspiration?

Given that I don't recall ever seeing those particular covers, I doubt it. But maybe I inspired myself with the cover I drew for the second issue of the original TMNT comic -- the one with the Turtles reflected in the shiny head of a Mouser. -- PL

    1. -->> This cover makes perfect sense. Ryan Brown's "PREHISTORIC MANMOTH" returns from an earlier TMNT ADVENTURES Special -- an Evil Doctor and her henchman are able to obtain a strand of the Prehistoric Mutant's hair, DNA included. We get one evil clone character later and a melee in the Doctor's lab. The Teens and the original Manmoth vs. the Clone Manmoth - - with the clone seemingly destroyed and April arranging for the Hero Mutant to be sent to the Arctic lands where he can live out in peace. The creatures in Leo's swords are two separate characters about to engage in a fight.

      Thank you for your time.
