TMNT Volume 4, #31

From the "Better Really Late Than Never" Department: Here's TMNT Volume 4, number 31. I don't know if I'll ever get around to concluding this story, but I realized it makes little sense to have this comic essentially completed, and not at least post it so fans of Volume 4 (and I know there are a few of them) can read it.

First, Michael Dooney's beautiful painted cover:

And then the "guts", layouts and pencils by Jim Lawson, inking by Eric Talbot, and tones, plot, lettering and script by Peter Laird. -- PL

  1. Awesome! I hope there's more. You once said that you plan on writing down what happens when there are no more comic pages and finish the story this way. Will we see that? I hope so!

  2. Wow, thans Peter! Was great to see some more mirage tmnt. My favorite page had to be the one where it looked like Don was dreaming that he was some kind of cyborg. Vol. 3 throwback? Either way, Jim's art looked really great there. And the last panel definitely makes me curious, but that really does seem like a fitting place to be for that character. Thanks again Pete!

  4. Thank you so much for posting this, Peter! I've been following your blog since you started it, and even though it's been largely TMNT-free recently, I find everything you share of interest. Still being the huge Turtles fan that I am, however, I especially appreciate you giving this story freely to the fans. Thanks again!

  5. WOW. So nice to be able to read this, even if it isn't in "tangible" printed form that we can own.

The story keeps getting more and more intriguing, and I hope you'll at least post a synopsis with some dialogue of what came to pass for us if you aren't going to "finish" the series. We always have our imaginations, but I'd hate to have to use mine.

  6. Awesome. I can tell the story is building up. I really do hope we get a climax. I can see we're at the very tip of the 3rd act and ready to conclude this.

    Thanks for posting this.

  10. I must agree, thanks a lot for posting this, Peter. I remember why I liked Volume 4 so much now.

The plotlines always feel like they're leading to something great, it would be wonderful if, someday in the future, we could get a conclusion to this story. If only to give the Mirage Turtles what would possibly be their, "last hurrah," from the creator himself.

Its hard to believe its been almost 10 years since Volume 4 began back in 2001, and most of us are still following it to date. Even if it takes another 10 years, I'm sure most of us will still be around to appreciate a possible conclusion.

  12. I very much appreciate what you've done here, Pete. I've read through it four or five times already. I'd much rather have it in an official, printed format, even if I had to pay out the nose, but I'm not one to look a gift horse in the mouth. Just the fact that you've done this for us is amazing.

  14. Thank you so much, Mr.Laird! A lot of cliffies in V.4:30...could only hope you'd return to finish the stories. Very grateful to see them here. Will be keeping a lookout for more. Thank you again!

  15. Thank you so much for posting this, Peter. :) I'm only about halfway through volume 4 right now, so I can't read it, but the images are all saved and I look forward to reading this when I reach that point.

I've only been a "hardcore" TMNT fan since summer of '09 when the last vol. 1 collection came out, but ever since I've been collecting as many of the Mirage (and Image) comics as I can, and am constantly blown away by the level of talent expressed in each issue. Vol. 4 is a whole lot of fun, and with some truly astounding artwork. I'm not big on most current comics, especially the ones by "the big boys," because the art and stories are so bland most of the time. "TMNT" keeps me coming back for more. Thanks very much for all the great material.

If anyone has extra copies of vol. 4 #s 23, 25, and 26...mind sellin' 'em to me? ;) I dread getting that far in the series before I collect those issues, 'cos it'll mean I can't read any further till I do.

Hope to see some activity from Mirage in the not-too-distant future. Even if there aren't any more "TMNT" books published, I just wanna see more of "the Mirage style." Lawson, Dooney, Talbot, Berger, and whoever else is still around, as well as yourself, Laird. Would love to see a new comic penciled by you. :)

    Take care.

  16. Thanks for this, Pete. I won't lie and pretend that I don't hope to see more, but I really do appreciate you taking the time to give us fans a little more.

It's great stuff, and reminds me of how much I looked forward to every Mirage book that came out. It's a feeling I don't seem to have with many books these days.

Fantastic work as always, Pete. Keep enjoying life.

John, I think you should go back and look at that sequence again. Donatello isn't dreaming of being a cyborg -- he's just still in his "shrunken down to action figure size" state, and living inside the robot body he has customized for himself. That's where we see him, asleep in a bunk and dreaming about himself in a "Robin Hood"-type scenario.

No Volume 3 influence at all! -- PL

  22. Thanks for clearing that up, Peter. I guess It's been a while since I've gone over the volume 4 series. Nonetheless, it was my favorite scene in the book, and I, like many over at the technodrome, really enjoyed the throwback (pretty sure I'm right on this one!) to Shades of grey, which happens to be my favorite tmnt story of all time! Hope you enjoyed writing that issue as much as I love reading it.
    Thanks again Peter!

  24. I will go on record saying that I have no problem with most of Volume 4. I'm probably one of the few who loved the 'April is a drawing' revelation.

And I'm loving the Mirage Battle Nexus.... So full of surprises! I just wish there where more pages so the plot could evolve even faster! Less wait time to find out...

Also trying to love life more than I have in the past few hectic years..hope you're having more fun as well!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I knew there was a reason I kept checking here for TMNT stuff! Great work! I especially like how the issue ended!

Hopefully we can at least get a synopsis of what is supposed to happen beyond this point.

    Thanks for sharing!

  26. I know the comics weren't selling that well, but perhaps you could release this in a limited run. I'm sure the hardcore fans would buy em up.

  27. It's always a pleasure to see you embrace your God-given talent Peter! By the way, do you think your time at UMass so many years ago enhanced your skills as an illustrator?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Anyone else considering getting this printed and bound?

Hey Peter, thank you so much for releasing this. It's such a pleasure to view this beautiful story.

Is there any way we might have access to this in a higher quality file so that we ourselves could get it printed? I'd be willing to PayPal over founds worth of an printing-press version.

    Thanks

In some ways, yes, though not really directly. Probably the most useful practice I got there was in the life drawing classes, sketching from models and still life setups. I probably should have gone to a school more appropriate for someone with my interests -- UMass did not have any kind of curriculum geared towards people wanting to become illustrators. -- PL

  31. WOW! O_O!! Great issue Peter! I was an avid reader of the Vol 3 series when it started up and collected it right up until the end. This comic was always great to me, as whenever I'd finish the most recent issue, I would immediately want the next issue to be out in stores. You always managed to write it like that, telling just enough story but leaving us eagerly wanting more when we finished. After reading this issue, I can see nothing's changed, didn't see that coming on the last page!

I hope that you will one day continue this comic, as I really did enjoy it and was really bummed out when it ended. Just pure awesome stuff Peter, keep up the good work!

Thanks for all the kind words, but did you mean to say Volume 4? I had very little to do with Volume 3. -- PL

  34. Yes, I meant to say Volume 4. Minor slip of the fingers on my keyboard. :-D

You are most welcome about the kind words, I meant every bit of it. I have to dig out my Vol. 4 issues now and re-read them, as it's been awhile since I just sat down with a stack and read through it. Although I think I'm missing issues 1 & maybe 5? I think I started collecting with issue #2, but I would need to see the cover to be sure.

  35. Any chance we can get this as a downloadable PDF file? It's a bit awkward to read on here.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Any chance that it could ever get printed? I would love to have this in tangible form.

  37. Thanks Peter, I cant recall if I have read the last couple yet I know I have them all but think I may have been waiting for others so I could read them in one shot.

Seeing as there will be no immediate conclusion this renewed my interest I will likely read the last of my Mirage books soon.

Very nice to have this posted, if its ever printed I will order a copy as well thanks again!

  38. Don's dream, was that a reference to Shades of Grey?

Loved this issue, mr. Laird, here's hoping that you will one day finish the story. Maybe release the last chapters together in a trade paperback or something?

But maybe the TMNT is the farthest thing from your mind right now.

But I for one, am patiently waiting to see how it all ends.

    ReplyDelete
  39. you should leave the series and have someone else write it. i mean i LOVE what you have done with it, but in capable hands it could be finished and actually be at least a few months a year comic. i just fear so much u wont finish this, and it is my favorite turtle story you have ever done. keep it real peter. love everything you have done in my life

Definitely more than a few volume 4 fans out there.

  43. I'd just like to express that I'd very much like to see this released in a physical format. If you're given the OK by Viacom to publish eighteen issues a year, then why not? A physical product is so infinitely better than looking at images on a computer screen.

    ReplyDelete
  44. please please please complete volume 4. peter, maybe you should team up with image comics to finish it. i think they would make a good official tmnt publisher (as long as you have total supervision(i am leo, i have metal arm! i am raph, i am the new shredder!))! thanks and keep it up!

    ReplyDelete
  45. I really need to sit down and read this issue, though I can't decide whether do just read it right off my computer screen or print it out. I sure wish you could've had this published.

  46. Nice issue! I really like volume 4. I would appreciate it's continuation!

    One question:
Is there still a possibility to get an online version of issue 30? I can't find it at ninjaturtles.com or WOWIO anymore...

    Unfortunately I have a gap between 29 and 31 :(.

  50. I have been a fan of the turtles since I was a kid and have gotten reintroduced to them in the 00s with the newest animated series and vol .4. I've seen many interpretations of the turtles by companies with no loyalty to them and always know no one does them like their originators. That's why I've been kinda bummed out by the whole Nickelodeon thing. Nonetheless it's great to see that you are still continuing this series slowly but surely. I have never given up checking. Someone had posted earlier about the series always leaves the reader wanting more. Yes that's so true so much in fact that I'm not in any hurry to see the series concluded, but you guys have things to deal with but it would be a shame if this beautifully thought out series was rushed to an ending that would be disapointing. I would rather see it unfinished than to have that happen. Keep up the awesome work!

  52. As an old shcool TMNT fan, it really a total bummer that Nickelodeon has everything now, because it means they will remain "Forever Kiddie."

I was truly hoping to see the movie arcs continue as well, (TMNT V, VI, or more) but of, course in Hollywood, everyone must unavoidably fall victim the much-overdone reboot wagon.

If only I had a spare $60 Million, then I certainly would not have changed a thing. I understand it being a lucrative business move, but no one else in the world will ever have the same care, concern, and mutual respect for the franchise the way you and Mr. Eastman does.

One of my lifetime goals is to have all 4 Volumes of the Original Mirage Studios canonicity. I have looked many avenues, but I haven't had such luck recently. May the new IDW canonicity, become a great success as the old Mirage Studios canonicity. Personally, I'm digging it.

  55. Dear Mr. Laird,
I hope you don't mind, but I compiled all of the images above into a CBZ file so that fans can read this issue on their iPads or computers, and can include it with the rest of their digital collections. I added a page at the end with creator credits and the copyright info from the top of your blog. Oh, and I fixed page 2 and 3 in Photoshop so that they fit together neatly. It can be downloaded here: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3843796/TMNT%28vol-4_2010%29_31.cbz
If this is not cool with you, please let me know a.s.a.p and I'll remove it. Thanks for completing this for us fans!! If you ever get around to #32, we would love to read it.
