Blast from the Past #277: "Amazing Heroes" cover in black and white

As I recall, this one was a lot of fun to draw. I did this in 1986 for the cover to an issue of "Amazing Heroes", a now-defunct magazine about comics from Fantagraphics. I believe there was an interview with me and Kevin in that issue.

This is the black and white version -- for the finished cover, I colored the other companies' characters, but rendered the Turtles in shades of grey using my airbrush. -- PL

  2. Love how they are bursting through the comic page and how the other superheroes look kinda ticked off about it. Haha! Great :)

  3. Yowza!!! ALl my faves on one picture! The TMNT,Batman and Spider-Man together!
Great work on the other heroes. Its a rarity to see you draw other heroes outside the turtle-verse. Thanks for sharing!
Now only if Batman and Robin (I) could team up with the TMNt for pic! :D

  4. Awesome! It's always fun to see your versions of classic Big Two characters.

Peter, If I may: I recently read an interesting account on eBay regarding a piece Don Simpson had given you and, for one reason or another, it ended up being given to the seller. Since there is always two sides to a story I wondered if I could ask what disagreement took place between Simpson and yourself that led to the removal of the artwork from your office?

If you are referring to the "Mantegna" piece that I supposedly wiped my feet on, I really don't remember much about it. I vaguely remember seeing it, but other than that, I'm drawing a blank. If in fact I DID use it as a doormat as claimed, I don't recall doing so. I suppose it is possible, but if I did do that, I must have done it VERY carefully with VERY clean feet -- looking at the photo or scan of it on eBay, I can't see any evidence of the thing ever being stepped on. -- PL

    Peter,

I loved this illustration so much that i color and shaded it to see it pop that much more!

    click my flickr .

I'd love to know what you think.
I wish mirage could have done a TMNT cover like this for any print, i think everyone agrees that the TMNT busting out of the cover is a very nice way to see them on the comic stands.

Gale, that's pretty cool! I think it's the first time I've seen that art rendered in color. -- PL
