Blast from the Past #84 repost: TMNT Vol. 1 #15 "clean" cover

Years ago, when I did issue 15 of the original TMNT comic book series, I wanted to tweak the cover to make it look like an old comic book which had "been through the war", as they say. I penciled the art, created a new logo, and designed the cover in the style (or at least my approximation of it) of the classic "Golden Age" superhero comics. Ryan Brown did a fabulous job inking it, incorporating a lot of that "Golden Age" flavor.

Steve Bissette told me about a copy shop in Wilmington, VT which could print color art on slick paper. I had them make a couple of copies from my hand-painted art, then left one of them on the floor of my car for several weeks to begin the "distressing" process. Later I enhanced it with judicious tearing and application of "coffee" stains (actually brown ink), scotch tape, and so forth.

This drawing bothers me -- not because I don’t like it, but because for the life of me I don’t know if it was ever used! I believe it was done for a proposed TV Guide cover. I penciled it...

Blast from the Past #60 repost: Donatello and Montana Moo

My good pal Ryan Brown (who, sadly, I do not see very much these days... but I do read his blog!) realized a longtime dream of his when, back in the 1990's, his "CowBoys" concept was made into a toy line, animated series, and a whole bunch of merchandise under the name "Wild West Cowboys of Moo Mesa". I drew this piece featuring Donatello and one of Ryan's characters, Montana Moo, as the basis for a congratulatory card for Ryan.



And here's the "cyberinked" and computer-colored version of this drawing which I sent to Ryan. -- PL

Blast from the Past #98: Archie TMNT Adventures #44 cover, pencils and inks

Here's another cover from the Archie TMNT days, this one from issue 44 of "TMNT Adventures". It features everyone's favorite shark mutant, Armaggon. The first image is of my penciled cover...

Blast from the Past repost #17: Archie TMNT Classics digest #2 cover

Some of the Archie TMNT Adventures comics were reprinted in digest-sized editions. For this one, TMNT Classics Digest #2, Steve Lavigne drew this rough cover layout...



... which I referred to when I penciled the cover (below). Ryan Brown inked these pencils (I think he may have inked all of the covers I did for the Archie TMNT comics).

It's a little weird for me to look at these covers, as -- when I did them -- I had to make myself conform to the style of the animated Turtles, i.e. no tails and eyeballs, among other things that I would not ordinarily draw when I drew the Turtles. -- PL
