Twelve down, one hundred and eighty-eight left to go...

Today I started doing the promised head sketches on the inside back covers of our copies of TMNT Volume 4 #30. I got these twelve done this afternoon.

My plan is to definitely do this in two hundred copies, and possibly a few more (I'll decide that when I get to the 200th one). But the exciting news today is that, in addition to Eric Talbot, Jim Lawson and Dan Berger have also agreed to do some head sketches in these books! Woohoo! (Maybe we can even get Dooney to join in...!)

I'm pretty sure Dan posted the ordering information today over on ninjaturtles.com. Be aware that it's one head sketch per book, and you should make clear when ordering who you want to do it. -- PL

  2. Awesome! Looks like I'm going to have to drive home on my lunch break to get online and grab a couple haha. I've already been harrassing Jim about doing a sketch in one for me, I'm very pleased to see that the other guys are doing some as well. Makes me wanna go back and buy more alternately-sketched copies of issue 29 to have complete sketched sets...droooool... Is that possible, to have the other guys do sketches in issue 29 as well? I'm probably opening a whole new can of worms here...

I don't know. I'll try to remember to ask the dudes and see what they think. I'm just psyched that they agreed to do this in issue #30. -- PL

  4. Man, I've been looking forward to issue 30 for so long, and now I have to decide who is going to do the head sketch in my copy. Sigh... time to put on a pot of coffee... I need to figure this thing out...

  6. all these grimacing heads together popped a question into my head. As I admittedly am not as familiar with the comic details as I could be (and I am sure others here are), did you guys ever address the presence of...teeth? I mean, in the old toon continuity it would make sense that the turtles could have teeth because the mutagen combines two creatures. BUt in the comics the mutagen simply makes things large and more intelligent correct? So why turtle teeth? Artistic license? I mean, I like 'em with teeth, just curious if that was ever addressed.

I think that back in 2003, when we created these characters, we didn't give a whole lot of in-depth thought to all the details of real turtle anatomy and how they should be reflected in our designs for the TMNT. The teeth were a fun thing to add, giving the TMNT much more expressive and dramatic physiognomy. -- PL

  8. This is awesome news. #29 with your sketch in it, it's great to see the others are willing to chip in. I'd love one by Dan Berger myself. The order isn't up yet but when it is I'll be sure to get myself one.

We actually created them in November of 1983, though the first issue wasn't published until May of 1984. -- PL

Any reason why the turtles can't have fingernails?

You know, it's funny -- when Kevin and I were working out the final design of the Turtles before doing the first issue, we had actually considered giving them sharp claws, much like those possessed by real turtles. But it looked weird, so we went with the more cartoony (and admittedly easier to draw) blunt fingertips.

When the first live action movie was made, the Henson people took it upon themselves to give the Turtles fingernails. That looked okay in the movie, but for some reason, I've never liked them drawn that way. -- PL

That's what we have Michael Zulli for. For all of those TMNT fans who need anatomically correct mutant turtles, refer to Soul's Winter!

You know, I really think it is neat when people do "realistic" intereptations of the turtles, like here Actually, now I'm curious...What do you think about these kinds of presentations of the turtles Pete?"

Some of them are pretty cool, although the one you liked to was somewhat strange -- I got more of a grasshopper vibe from it than a turtle! But I've seen some that are quite beautiful. In all honesty, though, I think the Turtles work best as stylized, graphic characters. That being said, probably my favorite "realistic" rendering of the Turtles -- if you can call it that -- was how the Henson Studio did the Turtles in the first live-action movie. -- PL

  16. Man...This is so cool.
Any chance I could order a copy and kick in a few extra bucks for one by each of you? Otherwise, I'd have to say surprise me...And take whichever I get..*smiles* The is no way to lose in this situation.
But man, I'd realy like one of each!!

I absolutely agree...The look and emotion that was able to be captured in the characters in the first movie is outstanding. I believe the whole appearance and feel of the film as a whole was the absolute correct balance of what a tmnt film should be. That spirit, combined with todays technology makes me very eager to see what can be accomplished with the upcoming new film.

Ugh! And speaking of eager, I cannot wait to get issue 30! It's been a long wait! Haha

  18. That's really good news! Can't wait to get my copy! I've just got one question Pete :)

Will you be doing a random full body sketch again in the batch of signed copies?
