Blast from the Past #392: Apr. 2, 2004: Re: TMNT -72 2nd draft 4-2-04

Apr. 2, 2004: Re: TMNT -72 2nd draft 4-2-04

From: Peter Laird
To: Lloyd Goldfine

Lloyd,

Here are my notes on the second draft of Ep. 72.

1.) Re: the following:

"75. methania
Wait!  Raphael.  Maybe we can help YOU.  There’s a super-computer called Janus on the Toyetsu Station.  If there’s a way to get you back, it will know.  We’ll take you there... AFTER the race."

While I appreciate the mention of Janus, it is problematic -- because, given PLANET RACERS continuity, the Janus supercomputer is a SECRET project, and there's really no way for Meth to know about it. But all is not lost!
I think she could instead say something like this:

"Wait!  Raphael.  Maybe we can help YOU.  After this charity race series, we'll have a break of a couple of weeks. Back on my home world, one of my uncle's friends is the premier subspace and temporal mechanics theorist in this sector. If there’s a way to get you back, he'll figure it out.  We’ll take you there... AFTER the race."

If we use this, it would be a cool detail to also use Meth's uncle's name (which I forget right now).
Of course, I still like my "we're planning to give the purse money to the Basfornia orphans" idea, but I'm willing to let it go.

2.) Before I forget, I had an idea which might be both fun AND maybe give Playmates a cool Turtle variant for the toyline. The idea is this: When Raph takes over as pilot of the #23 bike, Meth wants him to look the part as much as possible. There's no time to make him a real set of leathers in the Team Fitts design, but I'm envisioning some kind of "spray on" costume machine which essentially paints onto Raphael a decent replica of Fitts Racing leathers, complete with his name on the back (which Raph would love). And so as to not have any kind of continuity problem in the following reunion episode, this "spray on gear" is only good for a certain amount of time, after which it naturally degrades and sheds itself... which could happen near the end of the last race, or just after it, and before Raph vanishes.

3.) Re: the following:

"There’s a bit of a jump!
EXT. ICE PLATEAU - FAR SIDE OF GLACIER – CONTINUOUS
Bike-23 launches out of a crack in the glacier wall –
-- and ARCS OVER a huge bottomless chasm.
140. FALCON
Going for the burn!
We see a PLUME OF FLAME shoot from the rear exhaust, propelling the bike forward as the worm flies out after them.  But it can’t make the jump and disappears down into the misty depths --"

A couple of problems with this. First, Falcon is not the pilot and I think this kind of action is something the pilot would need to take. Second, I'm not crazy about this "going for the burn" line followed by flames (!) shooting out of the rear exhaust. The bike is not rocket-propelled. (This kind of reminds me of the cover art on some of the old Gold Key "Star Trek" comics based on the original TV series, where the cover artist -- in ignorance of the advanced nature of the Enterprise's propulsion systems -- would draw the ship with rocket flames shooting out of the warp nacelles!) Why not have Falcon just say "Full throttle!"?

4.) As I have said before several times, I am REALLY not loving this whole "phasing" thing. To me it's totally extraneous and inconsistent with the way we have the Turtles (or at least Raph, Mike and Don) get rescued from the different dimensions they've been sent to, i.e. by Leo using the power of the Daimyo's warstaff... which, if memory serves, he uses only ONCE. So why are the boys constantly "phasing" in and out?
And if the "phasing" has NOTHING to do with the warstaff, and it's just some weird side-effect of the Turtles' being sent to the other dimensions, why bother with it? It's just a time-waster then.

Apr. 2, 2004: comments on character designs for "Superturtles" episode

From: Peter Laird
To: Lloyd Goldfine

Lloyd,
Here are some notes on designs sent recently.
I have no problems with any of the set designs in this group:
Ext. Megatropolis City
Ext. Sliver Tower
Ext. Shell of Justice (love this one!)

Int. Monitor Area -- Shell of Justice
Int. Shell of Justice
Int. Sliver's Tower
As for the character designs, some are pretty close. I have a few comments:
K'Nign: His head is too dragon-like -- I think it should be more dog/wolf-like.
Slaythereen: I like the added "cobra flare" around the neck, but the head looks too "cartoon snake"-goofy and not mechanical enough -- I'd prefer something closer to the comics version. (Note: This drawing is labeled "Slythereen", but the character in the comic is called "Slaythereen". If my memory serves me, this is because when naming these characters I did an Internet search to see if they were already being used, and "Slythereen" was.)
Griddex: He looks ludicrously malproportioned in this drawing. I also prefer the original costume over this "short-sleeve t-shirt" look.
Shellectro: Yuck. I like the simplicity of the original design.
Blobboid: Also Yuck. I know the original design is not terribly different from a basic Turtle look, but this one leaves me cold.
Graviturtle: Somewhat yuck. Too many clothes. One thing I should emphasize -- when I originally designed the Super Turtles, I tried to NOT give them too much in the way of costumes, to allow their Turtle-ness to show through. Thus, the original Graviturtle has cape, boots, gloves, belt and cowl -- and the rest of his Turtle body is exposed. I think that style works better.

Apr. 2, 2004: notes on Ep. 74 outline

From: Peter Laird
To: Lloyd Goldfine

Lloyd,
Here are my notes on the Ep. 74 outline.
1.) Re: the following:

"Hebi tells the moles to DISPOSE of Tomoe Ame, but a voice tells them to stop.  From the shadows, a figure emerges…
A HUMAN – LORD HIKIJI."

Hmmm... I was under the impression that there were no humans in Usagi's world. Am I mistaken?
2.) Re: the following:

"Leo may have no clue how to get back to his own world, but the BattleNexus is a place that can be reached from any world!  Once there, he can speak to the Daimyo.  As ruler of the BattleNexus, the Daimyo wields the WarStaff, a weapon imbued with the power to create doorways between the BattleNexus and any other world.  With the Daimyo’s help, Leo can get back to his home world and help his family."

Just so it doesn't seem TOO easy, maybe we should throw in a line or two here or elsewhere to indicate that getting to the BattleNexus and finding the Daimyo and his WarStaff is only the FIRST step... because even if they can accomplish that, they have no idea whether or not  the Daimyo has the power to FIND Leo's brothers, lost among the uncounted parallel universes.
3.) Stan would have the answer to this one, I'm sure -- are the mole ninja (Mogura ninja) near-sighted like real moles, and do they depend a lot on sound and smell? The reason I ask is that it might be a fun bit if the way they locate Gen and Noriyuki (while Leo and Usagi are infiltrating the castle) is by following the strong scent of something that Gen is cooking for Noriyuki's (and his) dinner (or, if cooking is impractical given the circumstances, maybe its some pungent thing that Gen is carrying around with him to munch on -- like onions or scallions or something). I can't remember if Gen has any habit like that -- but I wouldn't be surprised. Again, Stan would know.

4.) Here's an idea I had that may work, may not -- feel free to shoot it down if it doesn't. I was thinking that it would be cool if somehow Leo gets thrown across dimensions by Ultimate Drako carrying only one of his swords (maybe the other one is blasted out of his grip during the brief and futile attack by the Turtles on Ultimate Drako when he appears in their lair) and eventually ends up with a sword from Usagi's world, which he brings back with him to our world and keeps it in his room as a trophy and a memento of his journey to Usagi's world and his adventures there with the samurai rabbit.
THEN... after reading this outline, and seeing the fight which Leo has with the evil Hijiki near the end, it occurred to me that it might be cool to have Leo disarm Hijiki and take HIS sword... which turns out to be (in a FOURTH season episode!) a very special sword with special powers or significance, perhaps a revered heirloom of Hijiki's family...  AND the "maguffin" which sets in motion another appearance of Usagi in the TMNT show, perhaps with Usagi and maybe Gen somehow finding their way to our world, in search of the sword (or maybe they're chasing Hijiki, who is the one searching for the sword). Just a thought.

Blast from the Past #390: April 3, 2004: Re: comments on character designs

(Note: The following email is one I wrote to Lloyd after he responded to my less-than-kind, shall we say, comments about the premise for episode 76 of the 4Kids TMNT show. Lloyd gently took me to task for my comparison of that premise to some of the more objectionable stuff from the first TMNT animated series. He didn't necessarily disagree with me, for the most part, but felt that I could have toned down my vitriol out of regard for the people at 4kids who were all working hard to make the deadlines required to keep the series on the air.

While I felt then -- and still feel now -- completely justified in the comments I'd made, and you can see some of that reflected in my explanation in this email about WHY I expressed myself in this fashion, I did take Lloyd's comments to heart and from that point on I gave some more thought to how I expressed my displeasure with things that aggravated me. I didn't refrain from pointing out when something seemed bad, but I did it in a slightly more thoughtful way.

Or at least I think I did. -- PL  08-18-11)

Hi Pete –

I tried calling you several times today but your mobile kept informing me that you were not available.>>

Lloyd,

That's because I was at the movies seeing HELLBOY, and I had turned off my cellphone and only remembered to turn it back on around 6PM. Sorry! I was kind of expecting you to call back after 4 yesterday, but maybe you got caught up in other stuff.

<< Here are a few issues I wanted to talk to you about:

Re: the fluxing, Mike Ryan reminds me that when we get to the Leo/Usagi in the Battle Nexus episode, they will try several times (three, actually) to bring Raph, Don and Mikey back from their multi-dimensional banishment, and that this will tie in with the three flux/phasing incidents built in to each script.  As per our last conversation you said you weren’t loving it but would go with it if we really thought it was necessary.  Clearly we think it’s more necessary than YOU do ;) , and I’d like to keep it for a number of reasons (that you won’t buy no matter what I say!)… so that’s the plan unless you want to exercise your power of executive veto.  >>

It's funny that you should put forth that explanation -- that they try three times -- because I ALMOST made that same suggestion in my email today about that draft as perhaps the ONE possible way I would buy the whole "phasing" thing. But I didn't, mostly because (a) I didn't want to encourage an idea I was not crazy about, and (b) as much as I wracked my brain I could not remember ever discussing the idea that they would be making these multiple attempts. (Of course, maybe if I go back and read all of the outlines and premises, it's in there... but I honestly don't recall it.) I do want to go on record, though -- even if I accept this new explanation -- as still thinking that the whole "phasing" thing is not a great idea for these stories.

<< Re: the premise for episode 76, I think you and I should come up with a story.  You and I discussed the character of Bishop and a broad story arc for him, and I think we should pay that off.  We’ve already set Bishop up as a character who is involved in a genetic engineering SuperSoldier project.  He knows all about the Turtles and Shredder, and knows about the special mutagen that transformed them through DNA samples he’s taken from the Turtles and LeatherHead.  We’ve also made him a super bad-ass, the ultimate black ops intelligence agent, and he has already held his own in battle against all four turtles, Karai and Hun - - all at the same time.  I think he’s a pretty intriguing and formidable character, and I think doing a big, final showdown between Bishop and our heroes can make for a strong episode.  I put forth my usual argument that it’s ALL IN THE WAY WE HANDLE the elements of this story.  While I definitely do not want to defend the premise as (poorly) written, and while I agree with most of your notes, I think your absolute f…ing hatred of it and your invocation (AGAIN!) of Fred Wolf in the face of how we’ve handled this show thus far is pretty unfair and only serves to bring everyone down (which is particularly hard to swallow when everyone is killing themselves for this series).  At any rate, since I can see that this one will be an uphill battle no matter what, I think you and I should hammer out an acceptable Bishop story together first thing next week.  Deal?>>

I'm up for that. I should say -- and it will come as no surprise to you, I am sure -- that I've never been wild about the Bishop character... he has never seemed to me to be very well-defined. But that's me -- maybe you have a much clearer idea of who he is and how he should be used.
You know, it may not seem like it when I blast a submitted premise or outline or script or design with harsh criticism, but I actually DO choose my words very carefully. I swore when I first started work on this new show that I would not put up with what I perceived as crap, as much for my own mental health as for the level of quality of the show. I appreciate GREATLY -- probably more than you or anyone else at 4Kids (maybe nobody but my wife and Gary) can know -- that the majority of material that I have been sent from 4Kids concerning this show has been good to excellent, and that the horror show days of working with (or perhaps I should say "sweating blood trying to work with and being arrogantly and condescendingly rebuffed at every turn") Fred Wolf and his crew are OVER. The amount of poor to crap stuff re: the new show has been AMAZINGLY small, especially given the tight timeframe we are working in. Maybe I don't say it enough, or at all, but I truly do appreciate that.
However, I think I could make a persuasive argument that one of the reasons that I DON'T get sent a lot of crap is that I have demonstrated from day one that I will not ACCEPT what I see as crap. I wouldn't accept Chuck Patton wanting to put points on the backs of the Turtles' heads, and I wouldn't accept some writer's idea to have a Turtle get his shell pushed in and then stick his thumb in his mouth and blow on it and thus expand his shell again, and so on. I credit you greatly with seeing that very quickly and probably doing a lot more filtering of material before it gets sent to me than I am aware of. I also credit you with a lot of good ideas and an excellent "feel" for the Turtles which was good to begin with and gets better as we go along.
I think if you were to look back through my comments over the last couple of years, I actually use the "Fred Wolf" imprecation quite sparingly. And I really only do it when something strikes me as REALLY uncharacteristically (for 4Kids) lazy, stupid, and hackneyed (all typical hallmarks of the Fred Wolf product). I think it's telling that nearly always YOU pick up on the same things as I do (although you don't react as viscerally to them, for the most part). Over the last couple of years, I think I've proven to you that while I have strong ideas and opinions about how things should be done (ESPECIALLY about these characters I have spent the last twenty years of my life thinking about and taking care of), I am not resistant to a good idea which does not come from my brain. If you can explain it to me clearly and show me WHY and HOW it's a good idea, nearly always I will agree. I'm not sitting up here with a gigantic swelled head thinking every little thing that I think of is the be-all and end-all of creativity.

<< Re: the Super Turtles, I feel that despite the original designs from the comic, it’s pretty important to make Griddex, Shellectro, Blobbiod and Graviturtle more superhero looking and less like our everyday turtles, especially when we have our regular turtle running around with them.  I also don’t think they should be wearing ninja-style masks.  I’m happy to make changes, but please keep this in mind.  Maybe you wanna do a few sketches?>>

I may in fact do some sketches, but my point about keeping the "Turtley" nature of the characters visible and clear remains the same. I think if you look at the original design of Graviturtle, there really is no way you could confuse him with Mike or any of the other "regular" Turtles -- and he has a superhero outfit which only consists of gloves, boots, cape, cowl and belt. I really think that's pushing it as far as I want to go in terms of covering up the Turtles with superhero garb. I acknowledge that maybe Blobboid and Shellectro could possibly use something more (especially Blobboid) and if I do any sketches it will likely be of those two. I'm not sure what you mean by "ninja-style masks", exactly... do you mean masks which look like those our regular Turtles wear? If so, I believe only Shellectro has anything like that. Graviturtle's is an over-the head Batman-style multicolored cowl, and Griddex and Blobboid don't even have masks (not sure they need them, really).

Blast from the Past #389: Mar. 30, 2004: Re: TMNT - 76 premise

Mar. 30, 2004: Re: TMNT - 76 premise

From: Peter Laird
To: Lloyd Goldfine

Lloyd,

Groan.

Here are my notes on the Ep. 76 premise.

1.) To start off with, I absolutely f...ing hate this one. I'm not even sure if I should waste my time commenting on it... but I suppose I should. I'll try to only hit the high points (or is that "low points"?).

2.) Re: the following:

"We open at the turtles’ lair, deep underground, where all are abed and sleeping.  All seems calm and peaceful until … <boom>, there’s a huge explosion as part of the wall explodes inward.

Laser sights beam around the room as a squad of Bishop’s commandos enter and secure the center room through much fire and explosions.  "

I have said many times that the only way I will accept the discovery and invasion of the Turtles' lair as a part of a story is if that story is GREAT and there is a GREAT reason for the reveal of the Turtles' secret home. This story doesn't even come close.

3.) Re: the following:

"The turtles rise to the challenge to face him, but Bishop isn’t interested in them.  "Amphibian DNA is useful, but … it’s not even close to human."  He’s come for different quarry today.

Bishop:  "Family Muridae, genus Rattus."  He smiles at Splinter, "Namely, you!""

For (hopefully) the last time...

... TURTLES ARE NOT AMPHIBIANS!!! THEY ARE REPTILES!
REPTILES!!
REPTILES!!!
Jesus freakin' Christ...

4.) Re: the following:

"Well, the boys aren’t going to let them take Master Splinter without a fight (nor is Master Splinter going to go without a fight).  So, there’s a fight.

Unfortunately, Bishop really lets himself go on the turtles and beats the crud out of them."

Great to know that all Bishop had to do was "let himself go" and he could -- single-handedly -- "beat the crud" out of all four Turtles. At the same time. Together. I sure hope he remembers to do that later in the episode when they fight again.

5.) Re: the following:

"Bishop scoffs at the groaning turtles.  He’s not even going to bother to finish them off he thinks so little of them.  "

Could this BE any sillier? At the very LEAST he would kill them to keep them from coming after him... after all, he SHOULD have learned from their previous encounters that they are resilient and resourceful. But no, for the sake of a RIDICULOUS "macho pose" moment, we'll have Bishop act like a COMPLETE FOOL.

6.) Re: the following:

"Bishop also has something else he’s working on.  An ergonomic portable gene therapy processor that one can wear (think Bane and his "juice") as a backpack or shoulder pack.

With this, Bishop can control, regulate his own genetic enhancements on the spot … for whatever is called for: i.e. extra strength, silence/stealth, seeing in the dark."

"An ergonomic portable gene therapy processor"... the mind boggles. So basically this is Bishop's own Fred Wolf-style "mutagen" -- something he can carry around with him and squirt onto himself so he can have new powers according to what the script demands? It's almost like that old comic book "Dial H For Hero"! (Or would that be "Dial V For Villain"?) Truly, the mind boggles. (Not to mention that if he already has something that has this incredible power, what the bleeding HELL does he need Splinter for???!!!)

7.) Re: the following:

"Meanwhile, the turtles, LeatherHead and Honeycutt are barreling down the subway tunnels on target and soon …

The turtles, LeatherHead and Honeycutt burst (literally) into Bishop’s base where they’re holding Splinter.

Bishop is surprised to see them.  And, he’s even more surprised to see his train car. "

And he's not the only one! What an amazing subway car this is -- somehow able to maneuver all over the place, switching tracks, etc. Incredible!
And the Turtles and Leatherhead smashing Bishop's subway car through the wall of his secret base lab -- brilliant! Why use stealth? Or intelligence? Or strategy? Let's just slam into a wall and hope we don't DIE so we can MAYBE find Bishop and fight him? (And hope he doesn't remember to "let himself go"!)

8.) Re: the following:

"The turtles face Bishop.  He uses his new portable gene therapy device and really starts to kick their butts … "

Can anyone read that second line and not break out laughing?

9.) Re: the following:

"… and the turtles save Master Splinter.  They carry him to the train car and roll out of there just as the whole place overloads and explodes."

Hmmm... was that the same train car that was SMASHED into/through the wall of Bishop's secret HQ? Durable sucker, that.

10.) My advice on this premise? Burn every copy.

Blast from the Past #388: Mar. 30, 2004: Re: TMNT - 72 1st draft

Mar. 30, 2004: Re: TMNT - 72 1st draft

From: Peter Laird
To: Lloyd Goldfine

Lloyd,

Here are my notes on Ep. 72 first draft.

I generally like this one a lot more than the first outline, but -- partly because the PLANET RACERS property is near and dear to me and I want to do everything possible to make sure it is treated properly -- there are a significant number of detail points I am going to comment on.

Please also keep in mind as you read my notes that someday I would like to see PLANET RACERS realized as either live-action or animation, and I would like this episode to be something that could be viewed as a chapter lifted out of that story, with internal consistency intact.

1.) I was looking at the "Character List" at the beginning of the script and noticed a few problems.
First, why are almost all the key characters referred to by one name when they have two? For example, "Godman Falcon" is just "Falcon", "Methania Fitts" is just "Methania", "Tripper Nitro" is just "Nitro", and so on. I would hope that in the script, if the situation calls for it, for example, Godman Falcon could be called either "Godman" or "Falcon".
Second, as I envision the events in this script taking place sometime in the time period covered by the three PLANET RACERS graphic novels, Godman Falcon is not racing for "Team Falcon" -- he's racing for Methania Fitts' team, Fitts Racing (or Team Fitts if you must).
(Actually, maybe it would be best if we think of the events in this episode taking place during some kind of special "non-championship" race, like an exhibition or charity event -- that way, we don't have to deal with the issue of why there aren't more race teams competing, as there are in the books. And it also could tie into a point I make later, in comment #4, below.)
Third, Tripper Nitro is not racing for "Team Nitro" -- he's racing for the Koyoshada Factory Team. I'm not sure about Critter Morgan -- I suppose he could be riding for "Team Morgan"... I just can't remember if we gave his team another name in the books.

2.) Re: the following:

"7. CASEY
That’s a graph-metal frame, Raphael.  It’s already light."

"Graph-metal"? What the shell is that? Never heard of it. If it IS actually something, we can keep it in here, I suppose... but I wonder if something a little more in line with real bike stuff is in order. In fact, maybe instead of cutting pieces off (which seems very radical), maybe Raph has just finished drilling holes in a piece (something racers have done for years) to lighten it up.
Along those same lines, the following:

"10. RAPHAEL
Not after I increase the back-shift time by point-two seconds."

"Back shift"? Never heard of it. I've heard of "up shift" and "down shift", but not "back shift". Perhaps instead Raph could say something like:

"Not after I tighten up the shift linkage!"

And Casey's following line would be adjusted accordingly.

3.) Re: the following:

"FAST PAN TO THE FLANKING BEASTS – also drawing dangerously near.
CLOSE ON FALCON – eyeing the navigational screen, the beasts seen charging up behind him.
46. FALCON
No!  We have an airbleed in the intake flow!
THE BEASTS POUNCE just as we --
END ACT ONE
 ACT TWO
FADE IN:
EXT. WESTERN QUADRANT - LAOTORA 4 - DAY - AS BEFORE
The BEASTS LEAP THROUGH THE AIR at the bike --
47. FALCON
Switching to standard fuel injection.  Go, go, GO!"

Far be it from me to criticize someone for making up cool-sounding but probably meaningless jargon (I've done it many times myself), but the "airbleed in the intake flow" bit just doesn't work for me. I think we also miss a possible character-driven fun bit here where after Raph does his "you kiddin'?" look at Falcon after Falcon asks him if he can ride... obviously, while Raph can ride a regular motorcycle really well, THIS bike is something else again. The way I think this bit should play out if like this: Raph confidently leaps into the pilot's seat. The Laotora beasts are coming fast. Raph pauses, scratching his head as he looks over the unfamiliar control setup. The beasts are closer... closer! Falcon's pissed -- he yells at Raph "Hey -- I thought you said you could RIDE?!" Raph growls, frantically trying to figure out the controls. Falcon exasperatedly yells "Just press the big red button [ignition) and twist that "go" handle (throttle)!" Just as the beasts are near enough to pounce, Raph does just that, and the number 23 bike tears off, leaving the beasts in the alien dust.

4.) The scene with Racing Commissioner Tangent Morrey in the infirmary bothers me a little bit. First, I've always seen Morrey as somebody fairly high above the day-to-day racing fray, and as such I don't think he could be bothered to actually come visit Methania and Godman in the infirmary. Because of that, I suggest that instead of actually walking in, he appears on a vid screen or as a hologram.
Second, I see Morrey as a real smoothie, cultured and slick, and thus he would not say "Yeah".
Third, I think it would add more to this scene if we have Morrey doing something more than just letting Falcon and his team know they can't race. I would suggest that, because this is a special race event as I suggested earlier -- a race which does not count towards points in the Planet Racing Championship series -- Methania is willing to let it go... but Falcon (with his big ego) is not.
What I suggest is that Morrey tells Falcon and Methania that because they can't race, he is going to pick another team from the roster of teams in the Championship competition to replace them. Falcon's ego can't deal with this, and he blurts out that Raph can fill in as pilot. Methania tries to dissuade him, but Falcon is adamanant. Morrey thinks about it for a moment, then agrees -- "It's against the rules, but as racing commissioner I think I can make an exception this time. Good idea, Falcon! This could be great comedy relief for the fans!" (Which, of course, pisses off Falcon even more... and Raph too!)
And fourth, a minor thing -- but I think there should be a line in there somewhere which states or clearly implies that while Methania is DEFINITELY out for this event, she is getting some kind of advanced therapy  for her broken leg which will have it repaired in a week or however long it is until the next race.

5.) Re: the following:

"Raph turns toward the door, as Falcon GRABS HIM, spinning him around, ready to fight if need be.
71. METHANIA
Wait!  Raphael, if we lose this race, we’re finished.  Every cent we have is in that bike.  Do you really want that on your conscience?"

If we go with my idea that this is NOT a race which is part of the championship, then the "if we lose this race, we’re finished" bit doesn't work. Here's my suggestion for changing Methania's lines:

"71. METHANIA
Wait!  Raphael, Commissioner Morrey is bending the rules to allow our team to change pilots... but only if YOU take the pilot's seat.  If you don't do it, we can't race. It's a long shot, but you're our only hope. And if we won, we were planning to donate the purse from this race to the orphans' home on Basfornia. Do you really want that on your conscience?"

6.) Re: the following:

"CLOSER ON FALCON – studying his screen.
79. FALCON
Systems on.  Course plot downloaded.   Whoa.  It’s subterranean.
80. RAPHAEL
Is that gonna be hard?
81. FALCON
No.
82. RAPHAEL
Ever done it?
83. FALCON
No.
84. RAPHAEL
Well then –
85. FALCON
Flag is up!  Three-two-one!"

I'm not clear on the reason for this dialogue. Why does Falcon keep saying "No"? Doesn't seem to make any sense. I think it would be better if Raph -- instead of asking "Is that gonna be hard?" -- said something like "Cool -- I do "subterranean" all the time!"
Also, why is Falcon saying "three-two-one"? He's not the starter. I think he should instead just tell Raph to pay attention and wait for the "boop!" sound which indicates "go". And should the #23 bike really get out in front right away, or would it make more sense that as Raph is a beginner at this, they are back in the pack?
And I would love it if, in this scene or earlier, we could have Falcon saying "Switching SmartTreads to ice racing mode!" (The SmartTreads™, as we all know, are the nanotechnologically-based racing tires which can adapt to any racing surface, on the fly.)

7.) Re: the following:

"101. FALCON
You’re corner speed has gone up 23.7 percent."

That "you're" should be "your".

8.) Re: the following:

"CLOSER ON BIKE-6 – as the RIGHT STABILIZER PAD extends to the side, the bike swerving over so the pad CLIPS A ROW OF ICE STALAGMITES – sending the sharp spikes flipping back toward:
BIKE-23 – the riders DUCK LOW as ice spikes clank against it, one piercing the hull, another slashing a HOSE on the side. "

This is interesting. If I am reading this correctly, Nitro deliberately extended a stabilizer to clip off those ice spikes to cause problems for Falcon and Raph -- right? Because otherwise, there is no good reason for him to do so, as it is a risky maneuver which could result in Nitro's bike going down.

9.) The hovering camera platforms which record and broadcast the racing action are referred to in this script as "speed-cams". While I don't have anything in particular against that term, I think we called them "race-cams" in the books. If so, I'd like to keep that term. Or did we call them "hovercams"?

10.) The bit with Raph using his sais to cause the ice to crack and allow the #23 bike to right itself is ALMOST in the area of "totally silly". So anything that can be done to make this more believable would be appreciated.

11.) This thought just occurred to me, and if there is no logical place to put it into this script, no sweat. BUT... I was thinking it would be cool if there could be a moment when Raph uses his ninja agility to do something on the race bike, and Godman is impressed -- and says something like "You don't LOOK like a Massey-Basheene -- but you sure BALANCE like one!" (This is in reference to the idea -- from the books -- that for Methania's people, the Massey-Basheene, balance is all, a spiritual thing, and nearly all of them have UNCANNY balancing abilities.)

12.) Re: the following:

"124. COMMISSIONER
Everyone was aware this was a harsh planet, and I have your signed wavers to prove it.  Now BACK off!"

I think "wavers" should be spelled "waivers". But that's not what really bugs me about this scene. Methania is very aggressive towards the Commissioner here -- she "rams the tip of her crutch against his chest -- pinning him to the wall" -- and I think that is wrong. While she is concerned and aggrieved, I think she would also be cautious to not unnecessarily aggravate the Racing Commissioner, who could -- if he chose to -- make life very difficult for Fitts Racing. So I would at least not have her ram her crutch into his chest as written here, but maybe get in his way with it, to make him pause and listen to her.

13.) Re: the following:

"136. FALCON
Uploading the new heading to your dash."

I think "display" would work better here than "dash".

14.) Re: the following:

"143. RAPHAEL
I hope your calculations are good, because --
Suddenly he starts PHASING in and out, then vanishes.
INCLUDE FALCON – looking up from his screen, alarmed to see Raph is gone, as the bike sails through the whiteness --
144. FALCON
Raphael!  RAPH!!!
And as the pilotless bike descends away from CAM and is swallowed up by the blowing snow --"

We've already been over this "phasing in and out" thing, so I won't go into it in detail here. Suffice it to say that I think it isn't necessary, and the story works better without it. And there's enough jeopardy here to make it superfluous. (Note: lines 150 through 153 will also need to be eliminated or changed.)

15.) Re: the following:

"INT. CORRIDOR – STADIUM SHIP – SAME TIME
The Commissioner stares at the document, eyes wide.
186. METHANIA
You sent our riders out there KNOWING they probably wouldn’t survive!
187. COMMISSIONER
Give me that!
And as he reaches for it, the Speed-Cam SWOOPS low to make its presence known.  The Commissioner freezes at seeing it --
CUT TO:
INT. ANNOUNCER’S BOOTH – SAME TIME
Nobby grins at the Commissioner’s stunned face on the screen.
188. NOBBY BLOE
Well, race fans.  Any mail you’d like to send to ex-Commissioner Morrey, we’ll be sure to forward it whatever Planetary Prison he’ll be sittin’ in.  For now, let’s check back in on our embattled racers!"

While I don't have any problem with Methania and Nobby's plan to catch Commissioner Morrey in a falsehood, I would prefer it if Morrey is at first nonplused but then in his suave oily way, pulls off some kind of face-saving move... which is not ENTIRELY successful, as he still has egg on his face. Also, because he has been filmed, he can't unfairly punish Methania and her team.

16.) Re: the following:

"191. FALCON
I’ll try and flush it out!"

There's one of my grammatical pet peeves! "Try and" should be "try to".

17.) Re: the following:

"202. FALCON
You’re a FOOL, Raphael!"

This sounds a little un-Falcon-like. How about:

"Nice move, shell for brains!"

18.) Re: the following:

"203. RAPHAEL
It was the right thing to do!
VROOOOM!  They burst out of there, the Mud-Riders now SWOOPING LOW behind them.
TRACKING SHOT – BIKE-23 zigzagging around trees at high speed.
204. FALCON
There’s no room for honor in racing!
205. RAPHAEL
Winning without honor is NOT winning!"

Perhaps Raph's line 203 should use "honorable" instead of "right", so that Falcon's line 204 has more resonance and connection with Raph's line.
Also, I wonder if it might be fun to do a line following Raph's line 205 where he pauses for a beat, then says something like "Geez -- I'm channeling Leo!"

19.) As i have already said that I don't like the whole "phasing" bit, the way Godman and Raph win just makes no sense. Let's figure out a better way for them to win... that is, if they HAVE to win. DO they? I'm not so sure.
Also, given my previous comments, Nobby Bloe's describing the race Team Fitts has just won as "the USPRA's race to end all races" is just wrong.

20.) Re: the following:

"Raph shakes his hand, but then starts PHASING again – as Falcon pulls his hand away.
214. RAPHAEL
I think this one’s it... better say good-bye.
215. FALCON
Yeah... well.  Always remember... if you do nothing else in your life... you were once a Planet Racer.  One of the best.  Good balance, Raphael.
216. RAPHAEL
Good balance, Falcon.
Raph then turns to walk away – shimmering, then slowly fading away… until… he’s… gone!
FADE TO WHITE:
217. NOBBY BLOE (AMPLIFIED VO)
This concludes THE USPRA Championship, sponsored by the Society of the Preservation of Internal Combustion.  Until next time, this is Nobby Bloe.  Good balance to you all."

No need to comment again on the "phasing" thing, but -- as much as I like the use of the phrase "Good balance" -- Falcon sounds a little too sappy and speechy here. I think it might be more in character if he makes some kind of comment after Raph disappears like "Just when I thought our team might have a good back-up pilot -- ! Well... that's racing!" I'm not entirely sure if that is right, but SOMETHNG like that.
Also, there's something odd about ending on Nobby's amplified voiceover, even though I like the content of his lines -- first, I'm not sure it's necessary; and second, I think to be consistent with the other Turtle solo adventures we should end with Raph getting SUCKED away and vanishing -- not just fading as he walks away.

Blast from the Past #387: Mar. 23, 2004: Re: TMNT - 72 Outline AND Mar. 24, 2004: Re: TMNT - 74 and 75 Premises

Mar. 23, 2004: Re: TMNT - 72 Outline

From: Peter Laird
To: Lloyd Goldfine

Lloyd,

Here are my comments on the Ep. 72 outline.

1.) Re: the following:

"We WIPE to the finish line, where Nitro and his Navigator come in first, with #23 narrowly passing the others with a full burn that drains the gel-packs, giving them a second place finish.

Enroute to the next planet, BASFORNIA, Methania repairs the damaged bike, the bent gyros, the sprung stabilizers – it’s amazing they got second, let alone even finished the race.  She replaces the gel-packs, but they’re out of spares.  No more full burns – or they’re finished. "

I'm not sure about this "full burn" and "gel-packs" stuff -- what does it mean, exactly? Seems like gobbledygook.

2.) There is a lot of stuff taken from various chapters of the three PLANET RACERS graphic novels, and while it's nice to see them referenced, I'd rather see NEW stuff for the racing scenarios. In other words, let's set this in the world of PLANET RACERS but not abuse the continuity of the graphic novels.

3.) I could KIND OF buy the racing commissioner, Tangent Morrey, using some kind of sound wave gizmo to agitate the beasts, but having him detonate a "tidal wave bomb" in the Malkrill Sea is just WAY over the top.

4.) The character of Tripper Nitro is totally NOT as it should be -- this guy would NEVER help Godman and Raph in ANY way under ANY circumstances.

5.) The bit where they balance on the rear wheel on the "very tip" of a sloped rock while they wait for the tidal wave to subside is just GOOFY.

6.) I think this episode's climax should be Raph and Godman Falcon winning one race.

7.) In a curious -- and unfortunate -- coincidence, this episode's outline has arrived right in the middle of a two week vacation that Jim Lawson (PLANET RACERS co-creator)  is taking in New Zealand, and I don't feel completely comfortable making decisions about this story without his input. I'm not sure that there is a way to get in touch with him, but I will try. If I can't, this is going to have to wait until he gets home.

Mar. 24, 2004: Re: TMNT - 74 and 75 Premises

From: Peter Laird
To: Lloyd Goldfine

Lloyd,

Here are my comments on these two premises:

notes on Ep. 74 premise

1.) Re: the following:

"Lying on the ground dazed and confused, Leo hears the sound of laughter!  “In all the known universe there is only one swordsman I have encountered who fights with such honor… and yet can make such a novice mistake <CHUCKLE>!”

I would take out the "In all the known universe" part -- if you think about it, it really makes no sense.

2.) This has to be perhaps the least-formed premise I have seen to date -- there is a LOT of stuff needed to flesh this story out. I think it would really help if we could get Stan to aid us in coming up with an adventure plot which would be a real "Usagi Yojimbo"-type tale, incorporating some of Stan's favorite UY characters.
With this in mind, the whole "princess being held by bandits and attacked by ninjas" adventure which is VERY briefly mentioned just seems kind of dull and generic. I would really like to get as much as possible of the unique flavor of Stan's UY comics into this episode.
For example, one type of scene which is seen often in UY takes place when in his wanderings, Usagi comes to a town or village and needs to find a place to eat and sleep, and it's usually in some humble inn, where he very often will encounter some new characters and possibly peril. We should definitely have at least one scene set in one of these places, and I think much fun could be had with Leo's reactions to Usagi's world -- the "people", food, customs, etc..
One recent run of UY had Usagi wandering the countryside with young Jotaro, who is actually Usagi's son... but Jotaro doesn't know that, and refers to Usagi as "Uncle Usagi". Jotaro is a young, impetuous but good-hearted boy (I think around ten or twelve years old, but I could be wrong), and I think his interactions with Leo could be a lot of fun.

Comments on Ep. 75 premise

1.) Re: the following:

"With Gyoji’s help (he summons up a scrying window), Leo is able to locate each of his brothers.  They see Mikey with his superhero friends (as he was in Episode 71 just before he fades away)!  They see Raph being offered to join the racing team on the Planet Racers world (in Episode 72).  They see Don just as the triumphant Shredder is about to run him through (as in Episode 73)!  Using the WarStaff, Leo is able to transport them all directly to the chamber he and Usagi and the Gyoji are in!  "

Why does this seem clunky, cheesy, and just plain WRONG to me? DO we REALLY need all four Turtles in the BattleNexus to resolve this episode's plot? Why can't we just keep it Usagi and Leo? And while I think the idea that Ultimate Drako has disguised himself as the Gyogi is cool, it doesn't make much sense that he would want all four Turtles in the BattleNexus -- I thought his punishment (and it seemed like a damn good one) was to send them off to individual exile in different dimensions, never to be reunited.
I would prefer it if the reunion of the Turtles takes place back in their lair and is the result of the Daimyo's power (after the final battle with the evil Ultimate Drako). Actually, I wonder if it would be useful to bring into this mix an unexpected element -- Lord Simultaneous! He could be trying to get back the Sands of Time Scepter, and after much hard work has tracked Ultimate Drako (and the Scepter) to the BattleNexus. His appearance could be what turns the tide of battle in favor of our good guys.

2.) I'm not 100% sure that it's the best idea to destroy Ultimate Drako. Could Ultimate Ninja be saved? Could there be a moment of redemption for Ultimate Ninja, where he at the last minute realizes the error of his evil ways and does something to help save the Daimyo? The idea that just occurred to me is that perhaps at a key moment -- perhaps through the efforts of the Ultimate Ninja half of Ultimate Drako --  the WarStaff and the Sacred Sands of Time Scepter somehow work AGAINST each other and the effect of the unleashed power is to SEPARATE the two halves of Ultimate Drako, allowing us to save Ultimate Ninja and destroy Drako (or save him too, for a future story).
Maybe the moment of truth comes when the part of Ultimate Drako that is the Ultimate Ninja realizes to his horror that while he (Ultimate Ninja) always craved power in the BattleNexus, the power his father the Daimyo commanded, Drako only wants destruction, corruption, and despair. Perhaps Ultimate Ninja sees that the only way to save the BattleNexus (and the Daimyo) is to sacrifice himself, and with that final (?) selfless act, he redeems himself... and the Daimyo has his son back... a son reborn.
