TMNT Volume 4, #30

(Recently, via a comment left on this blog, I was made aware that although I have posted digital version of TMNT Volume 4 #'s 31 and 32, I never posted one of #30. I will now correct that oversight.

In re-reading this issue before posting it, I noticed -- with some slight hint of melancholy -- the announcement in the letters pages of the fifth TMNT move project we had started working on just prior to the sale of the TMNT property to Viacom. Obviously, the sale -- which happened shortly after the initial publication of this issue -- put paid to that plan. While I am glad the sale happened, it does make me a little sad that we never got to see that project thorough to fruition. C'est la vie. -- PL}

  1. Is this new movie a totally different project or was something of the movie mentioned in the letters salvaged into this film?

I will go watch it this weekend, and I am sure I will love it. I still do not know what it will be about (I refuse to watch trailers so they do not spoil anything), but it would be interesting to revisit the original plots from the 1984 comic series.

  2. I have not yet seen the new 2014 TMNT movie, so I can't say for sure, but I suspect the 2014 TMNT movie -- outside of the basic concepts like the Turtles, Splinter, April, etc. -- is a totally different project. -- PL

  3. Yeah, I suspect that, as well.

Let us hope someone will go for an "origins" movie someday.

  4. Is there any word on the print copy of #31 you said you wanted to do around the time #32 came out?

As for the movie, is there any reason they couldn't have gone with the original plan for the movie even after the Viacom sale?

    1. I plan to do a printed edition of TMNT Vlume 4 #31, but do not have a specific date yet for that.

As for the movie -- though I am not absolutely sure the new owners (Viacom) could have used the plan we'd begun working on for the next movie, I am pretty sure they could have, had they wanted to. -- PL

  5. Thanks for opsting V4-30! You mentioned the pre-buyout movie. Is there any chance you could post any tidbits about what was planned for the story or general take on the material?

    1. I'm not sure how much of that stuff -- and there wasn't a lot, as we had really just begun to get into it -- I can post here. I'll try to remember to look into it. -- PL

    2. Thanks! Your 2007 TMNT and 4Kids development posts were super interesting. It would be really cool to see something similar for the unproduced movie projects, if that's even possible.

  6. Thanks for posting this issue online! :)

I was wondering if you have watched the finished TMNT documentary yet? I want to buy it as soon as I find it here in London.

  8. Yay! This is another Vol.4 issue that I never got to read.

Not to be greedy.. but what about 29? That was the first of the mail order only issues. I do recall it actually did get a digital release via some digital comics service... waaaaaaaaay back. But I suspect that service is long gone.

Interesting about the 5th TMNT film. Was it intended to be a direct sequel to TMNT (CGI film)?

    1. I'll look into #29 -- can't find the file right now on my laptop computer, but it might be on another one.

As for the fifth movie -- I think it was supposed to be a sequel to the 2007 movie, but I could be wrong about that. It's been a while since I reviewed those notes. -- PL

    2. Actually, I just talked to Gary Richardson today about this subject, and he recalls that the proposed movie was NOT going to be a direct sequel to the 2007 "TMNT", but instead was going to be a sequel to the first live-action movie, and -- as he remembers -- ignoring movies 2 and 3. That could have been fun! -- PL

    3. Fascinating. Yeah that could have been very interesting. The first TMNT film is definitely, arguably I suppose, the best. Going back the roots of what made that film endearing definitely could have been fun

    4. I have a copy of #29 I would be willing to scan today and send to Mirage's email to forward to Peter. I would need permission from Pete before I could do that.

    5. If the movie was meant to be a sequel than why did the press release say the film would focus on the origins of the Turtles?

    6. Secret of the OOZE did that too. So its not necessarily unusual to have a sequel deal with character origins.

    7. i remember hearing that the planned movie was going to be live action practical turtle suits with cgi faces

    8. "If the movie was meant to be a sequel than why did the press release say the film would focus on the origins of the Turtles?"

Contrary to what the tone of your question implies, there is no contradiction here. I believe the point was that -- much like Kevin Eastman and I explored some of the secrets behind the mysterious TCRI organization in the early issues of the TMNT comics, revealing much about the source of the strange ooze which caused the Turtles and Splinter to mutate -- the movie would have taken a look at those parts of the TMNT origin story which were never dealt with in the previous live action movies. -- PL

  9. Any chance of getting a printed copy of #31? My collection feels incomplete. I haven't read 32 cuz I don't have a 31.

  10. Not sure if you will respond Mr. Laird, but is there anyway you could make a "Main" link to the other comics you have added to your blog, it will be really useful in finding the other issues. Thanks so much!

  12. Can you direct me to a site or a link to buy/download the full volume 4? I can't seem to find it anywhere, and here, there is only three issues. Thank you, and have a great day!

    1. Viacom controls all TMNT reprint rights (I think) and though they have via IDW reprinted a number of Tales of the TMNT issues (not all of it, and not since May of 2016) from the same period of Vol. 4, they have not reprinted any of Volume 4 yet. This is unfortunate. Though I hear they are nearly finished reprinting vol.2. Which means they may do Vol.3, or skip it for Vol.4. Either way it sure would be nice to see Vol.4 on ComiXology someday.

The three issues you find on this Blog, are the issues Laird and Co. put out AFTER the Viacom Turtles buyout. Which they continue to have the rights to do so.
