This single drawing -- penciled by me in 1992 -- showing the turtles (along with Ray Fillet and Mondo Gecko) battling the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse was actually split into three separate pieces for three separate covers for the Archie TMNT book... and it was brilliantly inked by my pal A.C. Farley. I remember having a lot of fun coming up with the designs for the Four Horsemen. -- PL
I love this cover. I have always loved this cover. It's my favorite comics crossover, and my favorite cover collection (even though there was a coloring error made to Mondo Gecko's tail). To see the original work is a treat.
ReplyDeleteOther than the brilliant design of the piece, I enjoyed seeing your take on Man Ray... there's something great about him being a little more stout than usual in the image. I would do anything to see your full take on the whole Mighty Mutanimals team.
Whose decisionw as it to put "War" in the Super Nintendo Turtles Tournament Fighters game? This is indeed an incredible cover. I was counting up the horsemen and only got to 3 and I'm like where's number 4 and then it hit me. I have these issues tucked away somewhere I'm going to pull them out and read them tonight! Excellent cover!
ReplyDeleteAll I can say is GREATNESS!
ReplyDelete-->> Konami plucked out characters at random from the various TMNT universes and media at the time.
ReplyDeleteNot just the Archie books, but the Mirage books, and classic toon as you know.
Some of the characters were exclusive to those games.
I imagine War as a chosen fighter for TMNT TF was a decision on the TF design team's part.

GREAT piece.
ReplyDeleteI always wanted a poster of this, and I'm still missing A.C. Farleys work, I wonder what he's up to these days.

I THOUGHT one of those characters looked familair...The Middle one on top of the rock monster...
ReplyDeleteHey Peter,
With Thanksgiving coming up soon, someone asked a good question? Has Mirage ever tried to get a turtle balloon or float in the Macy's Parade? I know the Turtles where in a California parade I saw on TV waaaaay back around 1991. One of the Turtles had his sign upside down most of the time if memory serves, heh.
Their car followed Bud Bundy (David Faustino) and one of the 90120 chicks...

Neil, I have a VERY vague memory of an attempt to do this a long time ago, but nothing ever came of it. -- PL
