That's it for the layouts for the comic book pages. The following images are from a proposed "Sketchbook" sction which never made it into the comic book.
This is interesting -- these two pieces of yellow legal pad paper contain some handwritten notes by Kevin about this issue. (I found them stuck into the back of this layout sketch book.)
Wow! These last layouts are truly jaw dropping! The Leonardo ones are the best (in my opinion)! I loved the sketch of the Shredder as well! He was very creepy looking! Amazing job all around on it! Thanks so much for sharing these!
-->>What is cool .. all the little extra details and comparisons from the final product.
Like in the sketchbook illustration :: The final 2 page spread.. of sendin' Saki's burning body out to the water, the Shredder helmet is hanging from Leo's sword handle that is sticking out from the ground in the comic. But in the sketchbook it's gone. Wow..
Love it love it love it! Thanks for showing us all of this RTNY artwork! By far, one of my favorite story arcs. It's fun to see all of this behind the scenes stuff. If RTNY is ever re-released in a special edition collected volume, I'd love to see these layouts included as a bonus.
It's great seeing those pages - I work in a big old comic shop, and I just found most of the RTNY issues about 4 days ago while digging through piles of forgotten comics in the back! I love that 2-page spread of Leo and Shredder which seems to really show the combination of Frank Miller and Jack Kirby influences!
It's a great story - I love how the brothers debate what they're doing and why. It really makes sense at that point in their lives, and adds a cool extra element of realism to it all. They're not just warriors out to kick ass (well, Raph is), they're individuals really thinking about what they're going to do with their lives, and why. Having Leo talking about growing up seemed really meaningful.
Thanks so much for running this blog! Like so many, I'm a life-long Turtle fan who's been reading your stuff since 1990, when I was 10, and to this day I am impressed and inspired by what you do!
The best part is that these were posted in the first month of the blog's existence. I can't wait to catch up on the following year worth of history. I'm am glad that you are an art pack rat. Thank you for letting us see your memories through your eyes
Why didn't it make it? Do you think you might do it in the future? (the sketchbook thing)
ReplyDeleteWow, old notes?
-->> ..those last 2 particular character renderings are the most overwhelming , least for me.
ReplyDeleteSaki and the Elite are such damm powerful characters.
Yeh , echoing Iroona..
.. there's gotta be something published with all this strong, raw work ..it's screaming for it.
