"Turtles Forever"

About an hour ago, I had the pleasure of watching the completed "Turtles Forever" 25th Anniversary animated special (I got my DVD of it from 4Kids today), and I just have to say: Lloyd Goldfine is The Man! This is not in any way to diminish the efforts of any of the many other people who worked on it, but Lloyd busted his butt getting all the finishing touches done in time to bring it to ComiCon, and he did a great job. I had a grin on my face through the whole thing.

I had seen all the animation a couple of weeks ago, but at that time it still lacked most of the sound effects and music, as well as some special effects, and some of the voices were just "placeholders". It's amazing what a finished sound edit can do for a show like this.

I know the official unveiling of this project at ComiCon is still a few hours away, so I won't say any more. I just hope that any TMNT fans who are at ComiCon and get to see "Turtles Forever" will be generous with their applause for Lloyd and everyone else who worked on the special. -- PL

  4. You might not be able to answer this Peter, but did the original voice cast from the 80s come back to voice the Turtles and Foes?

  5. The sheer thought of hearing both Michael Sinterniklas and Cam Clarke, voicing The Ninja God Leo, is simply too much for my feeble mind to handle.

Dammit, I'm here in New York, pleeese tell me this going to get premiered in NYComic-Con, why does California always win out with these matters?!

  6. Hi Pete,

Thank you, thank you, thank you! You sure know how to put on a party! Thank everyone involved.

I've been to a few of these types of parties and I've always felt like an outsider... but everyone was treated like a VIP even though most of us walked in after a long day at comic-con.

With John Lasseter & Hayao Miyazaki to start my day (yes, I woke up a bit late) and the TMNT Party to end it... = Best Comic-Con Day EVER. Pete, if this sounds like bragging please edit as needed, but I think the other fans would love to hear about how much you and the Mirage team appreciate them all (as one of my favorite comedians would say... obviously).

Seems like tickets were distributed a bunch of ways... either through scavenger hunt, playing the video games (very cool) or randomly meeting someone working for Mirage. I liked how this was done, gave all of us fans something to break the ice with.

Let's start with the venue. Great, classy place with impressive projection/sound system. Felt like the dot com days all over again!

Gourmet buffet warmers with none other than veggie, chese and peperoni pizzas inside them!!!! 2 free drink tickets... I think you said you don't drink hard liquor, but... thanks for the Sewer Slime concoction! I also had a regular coke... but the best thing was THE CAKE. Oh so good. Light and tasty.

There were plenty of tokyopop cine-manga turtle books at each table for fans to have as a keepsake, along with the 1/2 ticket stub that we allowed to keep (more on this later), thank you. But little did any of the fans know...

At this point I was already in heaven. All the Mirage guys were hanging around and talking with folks.

The CEO of Mirage then got up and everyone sang happy b-day to the 4 turtles in costume (with which people could pose). This was followed by the first wave of awesome giveaways based on our ticket numbers. Here is what I remember...

    1) Uh, the first production line FUGITOID!!!!!!!! OMG!!!!!
    2) City At War T-Shirt... really nice.
    3) Several seasons of the animated show on DVD.
    4) A collection of live action and the latest CG TMNT movies
    5) The original 1st collected volume of TMNT signed by Pete
    6) Possibly the newest collection signed by Pete (I might have misheard the announcement)

Now we proceeded to watch TURTLES FOREVER. For some reason I thought this was going to be some retrospective. Uh, no spoilers... but it was pure genius. Most joy I've had in a long time and will be enjoyable by all TMNT fans... very clever. I don't know how you guys can market this... other than like the promos for The Matrix that revealed nothing and just posed the question... What is the Matrix? Having said that, again, I as floored, pure genius, every little bit from beginning to the end. Please include your video message in some form when this is distributed (if in theatres, maybe after the credits as a special blurb or in the beginning if on TV or Blu-Ray).

After the screening, but before people left, they did a second round of giveaways. This time for Playmates re-issue figures.... and it seemed like a tons of people got figures. Both my friend and myself scored figures. Very nice.

And of course, it didn't stop there. On the way out we were each handed a deluxe version of issue #1 signed by Pete!!!!! And here I thought all my TMNT stuff would be missing Pete's signature! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

What a wonderful way to celebrate 25 years of Turtles.

Lastly, a special thanks has to go out to everyone working the
SDCC booths, including Kevin Eastman at the Heavy Metal booth who always seems to have time to do sketches, talk with fans and take pictures.

Pete... you should be very proud of what you've done in your life. Amazing. Thank you for sharing your vision/passion with all of us.

  7. is ba turtles forever a new dvd or tv special or what?

  8. Tygermaniac,

I believe they have yet to determine how this will be released. It's really quite special and it deserves the best possible distribution. I think everyone in their mid twenties to thirties grew up with the turtles but only a small fraction have seen the newer movies/cartoons. This could appeal broadly, similar to the Simpsons. Maybe they will perform test screenings like Hollywood movies and have people leave feedback on the various aspects of it to help determine how to best distribute it.

  9. I can't wait to see that special. You say you got a DVD copy? Is that especially for you, or can we expect retail copies as well?

My understanding is that there will be a DVD release of this special -- however, I don't know when that will be. I suspect sometime this year. -- PL

Thank you, and thanks for your lengthy comment. If it's all right with you, I'd like to print it in the letters pages of the next issue of the TMNT comic book. -- PL

  12. Peter, I'll give you 50 bucks for your copy of Turtles Forever. I'm just dying to see this badboy, I can't stand the fact that it played on the opposite coast :(

  13. Dear Peter,

Is there ANY way a quick showing, out doors or otherwise, would be possible for this movie in NY with the entire 4kids crew, cast and all, before it premiers?

It just sucks that so many plans where announced so late, that I didn't bother to book my trip in time. And even if I where able, finding a travel partner would have been tough. Sigh, all the cool stuff STILL happens out west..

BTW, what secret restaurant recipe would I Have to steal in order to get a review copy sent out for heroesinahalfshell.org ? My contacts suddenly turn quiet with mentions of stuff like this :).

Of course you can print it.

Again, thanks for everything! BTW, I was walking by the Heavy Metal booth and heard Kevin say he never got over to see the Mirage guys. Then again, he seemed to always be signing/drawing/taking pictures with fans. Not sure where he gets the energy!

  18. Just have to say, Turtles Forever was simply awesome. I'd sit the 19 hours on planes again in a heart-beat for a chance to see it once more.

But I am looking forward to it being released on DVD so my kids can see it and they can laugh at me tearing up over it all in joy. (Seriously, every time the TMNT doco guys interviewed me I was in fan-girl tears! They caught me just after the movie had finished. But despite what they recorded, I can be sane, when I wanna be. Honest! XD)

I was lucky enough to get to thank most of those at the showing or the SDCC who contributed to the movie. But I want to thank you too Peter. Thank you so very much.

    Cheers!

  23. I love this blog, is really amazing. The turtles are my favorite animal because they are quiet and they never represent a danger for anybody. This is the main reason why i love it. And how big they can be. Simply wonderful.
